Travelling with methotrexate injections

Hi all,

I will soon be travelling abroad with methotrexate injections, anyone have any advice regarding this? I will get a letter from GP but do I need anything else? What about disposing of the injections, do I need to carry a sharps bin? ???

Update for this post - I have now travelled twice (4 flights) with MTX and have had no problems. You have to laugh though, I put an unopened bottle of Oramorph and one of Lactulose through security. Which one did they take away to test? You guessed it, the stool softener 😂!!

Me & my MTX injections have been on many a journey without problem. I carry a letter and my prescription for other drugs, but have never been asked for it. If you are travelling by plane, they have to be in your hand luggage as as they mustn't go in the hold as it's too cold. I let mine go through the scanner, as advised by the manufacturers, and have never had a problem. I keep them in the boxes, so it's not obvious they are pointy syringes anyway, and put them in a clear plastic bag just like the toiletries as most places/airlines give you an extra allowance for personal medicine. And then pop the used one back in the box for the journey home.

Enjoy the trip!

Thanks helixhelix,

We are in the process of buying a property in Spain so will be flying back & forth quite frequently (I hope!) Good to know you haven't experienced any problems. X

I was told at hospital that a some of the patients inject the day before they go so one less to take. Keep it hand luggage. You can get a travel sharps box.

I have travelled to South Africa and USA with Meth. injections. All I had to do was get a letter from my Rheum and ensure the injection and letter was in my hand luggage. I have never been asked to see it. I do hope you have a pleasent trip. Enjoy

This is from the Metoject website, may clear up a few things for you

Please carry Metoject® PEN / Metex® PEN in the closed original packaging in your hand luggage. Hereby, you can control the storage at room temperature of > 15°C and < 25°C. Should the temperature rise above 25°C in the aircraft cabin, please ask a stewardess to put the pens in a fridge on board.

If you plan to travel to warmer areas, please consider to carry a small cooling box for the transport from the airport to your hotel. In case of unexpected elongation of your journey, please consider to take additional Metoject® PENs with you.

Should you require any document to attest that you need Metoject® PEN for your therapy when entering a foreign country, please find I attached a certificate in English, Spanish, French, German and Turkish below. A completely filled out form should be accepted in most countries. Traveller's certificate for patients carrying Metoject® PEN on flights: [Download PDF-File] This the link for the certificate metoject.com/fileadmin/user...

Once in Spain keep it the coolest part of the property, you'll probably have air conditioning? When I lived there I used to keep mine in a drawer in the kitchen & never had a problem even at the hottest times of the year.

I hope all goes well with your property purchase. We're at the other end, in the process of selling ours.

Thanks, that's brilliant, I will download that form. Apartment is finished just waiting for paperwork to be processed by the authorities. Fingers crossed it all goes through by the end of July as the council offices all close for the month of August which means we won't get our keys until September. And of course . . . I have a surgery scheduled for September to have my wrist fused!!!

Hey ho!! X

Oh good, I'm pleased. Everything's crossed for a quick exchange, though I don't need to tell you that they start winding down for the summer break around mid July. It would be nice to have a break before your op so hopefully there'll be no unforeseen problems. Have you had sight of the nota simple? That's the main thing prior to purchasing, that it's in order ready to go to the notary. x

We have been to the notary etc back in October,it's a new build so we are literally waiting for "I"s to be fitted and "t"s. crossed 😄

Ah so the paperwork you're waiting for is the Cédula, from the Town Hall. It'll be lovely to have a bolt hole to go to.

Hi

I bought an insulated bag designed to hold a baby's bottles. My Rheumy told me they no longer write a separate letter but that a copy of the last letter he sent to my GP is ok.

The only problem I have ever had with customs was entering Beijing when I was taken to a side room and they eventually confiscated the refill for my gas hot brush!!
