Sulfasalazine and high Liver score.

Good morning all.

I was diagnosed with seropositive RA in Oct 15. I've been on MTX and Hydroxychloroquine until recently when flares have been constant. It was decided to swap Hydroxychloroquine for Sulfasalazine. After two weeks I went for bloods and my Liver score(ALT) had gone up to 84. My nurse called and told me to stop all meds and have more bloods done a week or so later. I went yesterday and after 10 days of no meds my score had gone up to 88. My nurse called and obviously advised to stay off meds until further notice and that she'll speak to my Rheumatologist. Despite my being a non drinker my Liver score has always been high-50/60 but it's not been viewed a problem as it's been steady. Fatty Liver was mentioned once but I've never been asked to have a scan. My nurse was at a loss this morning and I'm feeling a bit anxious about things in case there's something non RA going on. Has anyone else been in this position? Does anyone know how long it takes for meds to leave your system after stopping? Thanks for reading.

Hiya I have RA and also inflamed liver, original diagnosis was primary sclerosing cholangitis however they've kinda ruled PSC out from my liver biopsies. So my RA has been poorly controlled over last few years as can't take MTX and had dreadful reaction to hydroxy, been on sulfasalazine with little effect had numerous steroid injections/ courses which do work but obviously drawbacks!!! So after MUCH deliberation all round have started on benepali....amazing results and my LFTs have squealed a wee bit but so far everyone happy I stay on it...so don't despair too much...my LFTs were in the hundreds...I just keep rheumy and liver team in their toes...good luck and try not to worry xx

Hi Buddy and thanks for your reply. I'm glad you're doing well...it gives me some hope! I've been for bloods today and am hoping that after 3 weeks off all meds my Alt score is down...I can check online tomorrow. My Rheumatologist is booking a liver scan at last so that's good...I guess!

Well my Liver score was down at last....by 3!!???!! So stay off meds...bloods again in two weeks and liver scan in a month
