I recently had costochonditus, knew what is was this time, as the first time it scared the life out of me, went to A&E incase it was heart related. I also have a hiatus hernia, had for many years, I take lansoprazol for this, even though I don't get reflux, I do suffer discomfort at times, recent X-Ray's and a CT scan show I have a nodule on my rib and an opacity on my right lobe, neither though to be serious, just RA and meds related. I would go to your Gp and get it checked out. Good luck X

Hi I'm sorry for the rant but I have been back and forth to the gp I'm starting to think that I am a hypochondriac as at first they said it was acid reflux then after many year on lanzoprazole they sent me for the camera down as I ended up in a&e but first they took a stool sample I had h pylori after the camera I they said I had chronic gastritis and a hiatus hernia I have been back and forth and then as you did I had pain in my chest I thought I was having a heart atack and they said I have costochonditis so all my pains I have been putting down to that but this pain comes and goes but I am bloated all the time last month I went to the docs and he said I may have ibs I'm really sick now I have an appointment at the surgery tomorrow so I wait to see what they come up with honest to god I am 48 years old and last year I had an episode where after I ate I had the pain under my ribs and I swear if I hadn't had my tubes tied it felt like a babies foot under my ribs and the pain was excruciating

Thank you for replying to my post as it helps that i know other people have been there to

It does sound that maybe you have IBS or maybe something similar. I have found that going gluten free helps me, have been for three and a half years, I also follow a low carb high protein diet as I have Hashimoto's as well. Maybe have a go if you don't already follow a diet. It might be helpful if your GP or consultant send you for a CT scan to see what's going on. You know how you feel, so don't worry about thinking you are a hypochondriac, you aren't. You don't say what meds you are on, they can cause problems as well. Let me know how you get on. All best wishes X

Costochondritis can happen whether you have an inflammatory disease or not. If you don't think it's the same pain or in the same area as it was when you had costochondritis then really you should see your GP, it could be any number of things. My h has it, he's had problems following heart bypass then a sternal dehiscence repair op. Steroid injections in two area of his chest helped for a couple of weeks, he's now back to square one & in considerable pain.

I hope you've nothing to be concerned about. Do you think it could maybe be an allergy/intolerance, that is if it only occurs after eating certain foods, or a digestive problem, IBS or diverticulitis disease/diverticulitis? Best to see your GP really.

One thing you could try, by way of elimination really, is Windeze, though I don't want you to think I'm underestimating the pain you have. As I say I'm not saying your pain isn't bad but trapped wind can be troublesome, bloating that often accompanies it can also mimic some conditions or intolerances though. I get trapped wind regularly in my shoulder following an op years ago & some times I swear it's nearly as painful as the shoulder joint pain I also have!

A medical friend told me Costochondritis is quite common, especially from the age of around 50.

As for your gut issues. Do you think you may have developed an intolerance? You could put your self on an elimination diet and avoid gluten and dairy and see how you get on or you can cut to the chase and get a blood test.
