Dental Probs with MTX

Hi everyone,

This may sound like a bit of a long shot, but has anyone experienced any dental problems when taking Methotrexate. I'm on 7.5 mg per week, which I understand is quite a small dose. I attend the dentist regularly and have done for all of my life. Just lately however, I keep getting niggling toothache, but the strange thing is, it's always in a different position, so it doesn't seem likely that it's a particular tooth. I know MTX diminishes the immune system, maybe I've got an infection?

I appreciate your opinion. Hope everyone is keeping well.

Hi I've only been on mtx about 5weeks so can't really comment on that but Had RA for 14 years though and have at times experienced the kind of toothache you described where you can't tell which tooth it's coming from.

My dentist said he thought it was some inflammation in a facial nerve and it would settle down soon which thank goodness it did . If you haven't already I would get it checked out at the dentist ...an x Ray would exclude an infection .Good luck Hope you get it sorted out soon and get rid of the pain.

That describes my symptoms perfectly, thanks for the advice.

I have been on methotrexate for about 10 years. I too have niggling toothache quite often. This week 2 teeth dropped out!

I have been on mtx for 20 months and had to have a tooth removed for recurrent infections that had spread to and destroyed some of my jaw bone (seen on xray). I had it out in November but have had no other trouble since, so hoping I won't have any more problems for a long time. Good luck and hope it's not infected tooth for you but "better out than in" my dentist said for people with suppressed immune systems xXx.
