Servicing scooters

A friend has a mobility scooter which now needs servicing. I'm wondering what people's experiences of this has been. Hers involves having to pack it in a large box for which they'll need help and they'll have to pay £150 for having it done. It'll take 3-4 days no offer of a replacement.

I had mine done a short while ago.

I purchased the scooter from Ableworld who have a retail outlet at the hospital where I attend my rheumy. Not sure if they operate all over the country but they sell scooters chairs, rollators,in fact anything to do with aids for the less mobile and disabled.

I rang them up,as my scooter seemed a bit sluggish. They asked me to take it in the following day which we did.Just packed it in the car, hubby put it together and wheeled it into the shop. They sent it to their workshop, took approx 3-4 days ( can't remember now) and cost £59.95.

We didn't have to pack it up or anything else.I took note of serial numbers on different parts in case it was split up at the workshop but all was ok. Unfortunately I didn't have the offer of a replacement during that time but it didn't cause too much difficulty as I had nothing planned that required me to use it.

Good luck.£150 does seem a bit excessive though.

That sounds really over the top to me. I had a local electrician/handyman service one that belonged to a community group. It took him an hour or so, and this was a machine that had been sitting in a shed for five years not being used. He told me that mechanically, they are one of the simplest machines out. If it doesn't specifically have to go back to the manufacturers under a warranty, then I'd ask around to find someone with a bit of electrical and mechanical knowledge to give it the once over. I was also told that the main thing that goes wrong with them is actually just battery life - with regular and frequent use you may need to replace batteries up to every two years.
