Turmeric and it's benefit in RA

Hi all, I had recently posted 3 food list for RA. In the herb section, I had included turmeric. Let me first inform that I NEVER MEANT TURMERIC TO BE USED AS A SUPPLEMENT , ONLY FOR USE IN COOKING. This is because we in India use turmeric regularly in our cooking. Also though I had read about turmeric supplements some time back, I did not remember it when writing the lists.

The above site talks of turmeric for RA in rats. Of course more research is necessary.

5 gms of turmeric powder containing 4% curcumin , actually turns out to 0.2 gms of curcumin . And when we add turmeric while cooking the quantity will be 1 or 2 gms .of turmeric powder, not curcumin . So the quantity of curcumin through food, will be very less.

Also, turmeric lowers BP, lowers cholesterol. is good for thyroid, diabetes asthma, auto immune disorders ( except ITP). So people should be wary only if they take 5 gms of curcumin . And no one uses 5 gms of turmeric while cooking, unless it is to feed a large number of people.

According to the book “Principles and Practice of Phytotherapy”, which was written by well-known herbalist Kerry Bone, there are no contraindications for turmeric other than allergic reaction, which is rare. With regards to interactions, because it has antiplatelet activity, Kerry Bone recommends that high doses should not be given to patients taking antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. In his book he also mentions how no adverse effects are expected at the recommended dosage during pregnancy and lactation.

Would it be possible for you t offer side effect of curcumin?

I have allergy reaction to many products, therefore I check for side effect and allergy reaction in any post.

It is very difficult to understand grams and % of products. Example what is 9 grams of sugar?. If we are to use spoons to measure it can be confusing! as spoon size vary. Many people under sugar cubes.

Sorry Bala, I have not taken curcumin ever, and we don't have curcumin supplements . So I do not know of any side effects. Turmeric in very small quantities used while cooking food is beneficial to health. That is all. Know. You must have some info about it on the net. And as for your allergies, since unhealthy gut is the harbinger of disease and allergies, you must make your gut healthier. I have tried to make my gut healthier by not eating anything that I don't digest well. And I must say that I am going in the right direction, as I feel very energetic inspite of having less food. Since I take the same food for at least 2 days, I am able to find out whether it is good for me or not. like I juiced radish greens and took it once a day for 2 days. My toes began hurting and swelled up. So I found out that radish doesn't suit me. And according to ayurveda, vata- pitta excess is the reason for allergies. Since 2 DOSHAS are involved, you can try vata pacifying diet, as well as pitta pacifying diet. But it is a slow process. You must keep at it with great determination and stick to it without giving in to cravings. It is tough . But one cardinal rule is : never eat anything that gives you any discomfort. This is what I do. Sorry, I cannot be of much help in guiding you.

How long did this "My toes began hurting and swelled up" last?

I do get toe pain when I eat some food, so far I have not identified the veg or fruit that gives me toe swelling and pain on my left foot, still working on this.

Coriander leaf is helping me with toe pain, I use it in sandwich at lunch time!

Hi Bala, the toe pain and swelling lasted for almost a week. I stuck with grape juice, carrot, apple ginger juice, carrot onoin, beet soup. If you get toe swelling then it could be gout too.

I have understood that curcumin is a powerful anti inflammatory. Used for hundreds of years. Some say it works better than NASIDs taken in right daily doses over a long period. And it does not have the toxic side effects of NASIDs. Usually prescribed by holistic functional doctors.

Hi

Just wanted to add a note to this thread - the ARUK did a review of supplements a couple of years ago and turmeric was included in this - you can see the item on page 50 of the booklet on this link: arthritisresearchuk.org/art...

In essence the researchers looked at the effectiveness and safety of a range of complementary and alternative medicines and drew their conclusions from existing clinical research, which in the case of turmeric was 1 trial. The conclusion that they arrived at was that because the trial evidence was limited it was uncertain as to the effectiveness of turmeric in OA and that the evidence suggested that its use may only have minor side effects.

There are several articles too on this link: arthritisresearchuk.org/sys...

As with all supplements, alternative treatments it is important to make your rheumatology team aware of what else you may be taking.
