Thoroughly recommend it. I was found to be deficient, and now take 800 per day ....on prescription. It has definitely helped me. M x

Hi I was deficient too. I take 25 ug per day and am now fine. I get it from boots, its in a red and silver box and you can get 3 for the price of 2. J xXx

Thankyou for your replies (Hatshepsut and jacey ) I think that my rheumy nurse recommended over1000 but can't remember just how much. Should I ring her to ask? As I can't get that amount from the chemist and I don't know if she has informed my G.P.

There are different ways to take it, so I take a mega-dose once every two weeks rather than a smaller daily dose. And I have it on prescription.

If I were you I would ring the nurse to ask, and check that she's told the GP so you can go & pick up your prescription. Waiting another day or so won't make a huge difference so best to get what's right for you.

Hi I take vitamin D, currently 800 iu per day, however started off with 4000 iu per day for 10 weeks, do you have a rhumy nurse help line you can call, or was it on the prescription. I would definitely recommend you get the right dose for you, my vitamin deficiency was very low, you also need to be sure about the unit type otherwise you can cause yourself other problems.

Hope you feel better once you take definitely helped me

Thanks janwelcolme, yes I do have a rheumy nurse whom I shall endeavour to ring today. At my last visit she just mentioned it. Although she gave me a prescription for extra MTX and FOLIC ACID she didn't prescribe the vitamin d. DD XX

It's best that you get your doc to prescribe the correct dose. I have been prescribed Adcal-D3 (chewable) as I'm very short of calcium too and I believe there are different types of vitamin D. Both very common deficiencies with RA x

Your needs are personal to you so best to ask your Rheumy nurse. Just ring so you're sure of the dose, a couple of days more won't make much difference I wouldn't think if you need to leave a message. I'm prescribed a daily AdCal-D3 1500mg(calcium carbonate)/400iu (Vitamin D3) as part of my osteo meds.

I take 1x 1,000 I.U daily as recommended by my rheumy doctor told me to buy over the counter.... I got one lot from pharmacy which cost me £9 for 30 tablets...then I went to health food store and in the penny sale got 2 bottles with 100 tablets in each for £8....no brainer really even with my foggy head I can do the maths....the penny sale is on at the moment by the way

When I started, I took four times the recommended daily dose. I took Nutrasea (Omega 3 - DHA and EPA) plus vitamin D, so I was also overdosing on Fish oil.

I do buts its on prescription and no good otc as to buy in this strength its very expensive and Boots told me actually illegal to sell in the UK. Mine is Fultium @800 x3 times a day. Ask the GP for a 'script. And also ask about B12 as that has ready made a difference to me. Look it up its really interesting and I have injections. Down side they hurt ! So my recommendation is talk to GP asap.

I'm a little different because I've had gastric by-pass. I actually got rickets before I realized I had a problem. I have to take 10,000 a day to keep at a midpoint level in my blood. But my husband's doctor told him that it is best to take between 2,000 and 4,000 a day to just stay healthy.

Remember a post a bit like this on Lupus forum. The !most important thing is to phone and check because there is a actually a big difference between vitamin d and vitamin d3 and the dosages so best to be safe and find out which and how much they suggest. I take adcal-d3 twice daily.tastes disgusting but there is improvement.
