Social worker here. I would contact your local adult social services and ask for a referral. gov.uk/disabled-facilities-...

You will be assessed independently of the way you were assessed for DLA. Unlike DLA/PIP, it is means tested. They will look at any savings you may have and if you have a certain amount, you may not be eligible. The grant is up to £30,000 so it worth making an enquiry.

Let me know if you need any advice or help.

Hi there, what help do you need? i only ask as i use to be a bathroom tiler before RD hit, and i had to stop work, so what help are you looking for? How to change it! around, your best bet would be to turn it into a wet room, if you get a grant? that's what i would do.

What happens with things like this if you rent? I have a lot of trouble showering these days and can't have a bath at all and have trouble getting on and off the toilet. Trouble is who knows how long we will be here, renting can be precarious if the landlord decides to sell, move back in or put the rent up. Is it yet another case of being a second class citizen if you don't own your own home?

Don't think it's anything to do with renting I took a friend of mine to be assessed on Tuesday she lives in council property.

I couldn't believe the lengths they go to not to put one in:(

We went into a made up bathroom first seat on the bath handrail seat to sit on lower into the bath. As soon as she got on the seat and Struggled get her legs over the answer was no you can have a seat and grab rail.

Taking into account she is 84 years old had major heart surgery a bad fall and took the calf of her leg of.

To have the seat and rail she will have to stand turn the shower on and wait till it warms up unreal.

The council referred her to this place and to me the less they give out of these wet rooms the more pats on the back they get.

Good luck hope you get sorted.

Yes some of us can get a grant although with me I just claim the VAT back.

I have just joined two cottages together and installed a larger bathroom with healthspar bath and shower.

Also I have put in an extra wide corridor for wheelchair use and a bedroom that is suitable for a wheelchair.

Have words with the Occupational Therapist before you have the works done. One thing we did do was use a slimline shower tray with it been recessed into the floor or make the bathroom a wet room. You could need to plan for wheelchair access. and set the shower controls next to the door of the shower so you can turn on the shower before entering the shower. If you get a concealed shower unit set it at a height you can reach from the sitting position.

Enjoy, I cannot wait to try all the gear

As Crashdoll says, this scheme is administered by your local council social services, so they will need to assess your need. I believe you can use the scheme whether you are in your own home or a rented home. In our area, a bathroom grant of around £2000 is available relatively easily, but the full disabled facilities grant of up to £30,000 is only available to people who need major modifications, primarily for wheelchair use in the house - eg widening doors, ramps, etc. Here, they won't do half measures for bathrooms either - its all or nothing, i.e. you can't just have a bath changed to an ordinary shower, it has to be changed to a full wetroom suitable for wheelchair users. Your council can tell you what the criteria and options are for your area though.

Hi, I live in Wandsworth ... I am on high rate DLA for care and mobility. I asked my council about changing my bath into a shower too .. the answer was no - not enough funds available these day. Occupational Therapists assessed me and they put stair rails up, safety rails in the bathroom, gave me a bed rail (which is amazingly helpful!!) and a bathseat (not so helpful). Eventually, I paid to have the bath taken out an a shower put in myself as I simply couldn't cope with all the clambering. Hope you have better luck.
