Can a GP give a steroid injection?

Can a GP give a steroid injection in the buttocks? I have been given them in the knee by the rheumy team before, and wondered if as the buttock was a less specialised area, the GP could do it. Anne

The doctor prescribed the steroid and then the nurse gave it. I'm not in the UK so not sure how it will work there although when my mum needed a steroid injection into her knee, her. GP gave it to her with no problem (in the UK).

Hi, just found out that 2 of our GP's give them, but I have to go through my own first. Naturally she is booked for next 2 weeks, but I will ask for a phone consultation. Anne

I have had both done by my GP but I do check with my Rhuemy nurse first as I feel they are 'in charge' of RD drugs and need to understand whether your current drug regime is working. They then usually fax the request across. They can sometimes recommend a higher dose than the GP would routinely give. I expect it also depends on what your GP is comfortable with. Farm

Thanks for your reply, Farm. previously I have had steroid injections for my RA. The last time, when I had both knees done, and it really helped the OA in my hip. I am kind of hoping the G will give me a jab as my next rheumy app. is end of September.

We've just got a new GP & he's qualified to do steroid injections. So it must depend if they're qualified to do so. Check with reception & they should know if anyone is at your Practice. Guess they'll be the more 'general' ones though as my H has to have some in his back & that has to be done at hospital using ultrasound to guide the needle.

Hello there, my GP was able to do a steroid injection like that when I was faced with a 2 month wait at the Joint Injection Clinic. Hope yours will be able to do it as well! Christine x

I think most can do it. However, I believe they do not give such a high dose as your Rheumy would give. Pat
