Hi,

I read in one of my leaflets regarding RA to avoid soft cheese, pate and shell fish. Not sure why but I can only presume its as our immune system is compromised re RA anyway.

I was told that this advice is now largely discredited unless you are also very elderly and/or in generally poor health. Although our immune systems are slightly compromised we do still have immune defenses. The risk is of listeria like diseases in the main.

Personally this disease affects my lifestyle quite enough thanks without taking away the pleasure of proper unpasteurised cheese. however. I do use it as a excuse to get nicer stuff and not real rubbish. And I am careful about general food hygiene.

Yes I was told that when prescribed MTX. Cheese and pate lover here.

No, I wasn't told that until I went on biologics because of the increased risk of infection.

I was never told anything about when I can and cannot eat. No mention of food whatsoever but that's here in the US. I hope I don't think her get an infection. That's kind of scary

No one actually told me to my face not to eat these things but I have read it, I thought cheese in the UK is pasteurised anyway, at least the sort you get in Supermarkets. XX

Maybe NRAS could qualify this advice for us?

I was told it too. I do eat a little Brie and Camembert now and again, but in Paris recently was offered some very raw unpasteurised cheeses and declined. Went for the harder ones, with labels I could check. I seldom eat pate so that doesn't bother me. I recall it being on the MTX advice I was given ten years ago ... a thin booklet .. but haven't seen it on my biologics pack but it could be in the Mabthera folder which has quite a lot on diet sheets and foods to eat. Must look. If drugs like the B cell depleters take your immune quite low then maybe not a good idea to have unpasteurised foods etc at and around the times of infusion? I don't eat mayonnaise due to raw egg .. I am quite sensitive to that. Shellfish .. I am allergic to so can't eat those. I can, however, eat crab and lobster! Yummy crustaceans!
