New Years honours list

I was just thinking as the Queen brings out her list, who would you honour in a New Years list.

I would choose Gary Barlow after all his work for children in need and visiting soldiers in Helmand. Also of course Ailsa , the founder of NRAS.

Who would you pick ?

Hi Alannah, unfortunately, the people who do the real work such as Ailsa get nothing by way of recognition. Honours are handed out like sweets to those whose only claim to fame is being some sort of celebrity or footballer all of whom are very well paid for what they do and are only interested in feathering their own nests!

I can think of many really deserving people who work so hard for their local communities, take no pay, give up their own time to help others worse off yet they get nothing or if they get an award it is the lowest of the lot an MBE. They are the ones who deserve the higher honours not some overpaid footballer whose only claim to fame is modelling underwear. Sorry but that is how I feel. LavendarLady

Hello

ME, LOL

When I read this on my phone I thought of the biblical story of Martha and Mary, one sat and listened to the stories that Jesus was telling and the other was always working in the background. When challenged Jesus said, The one who does thing without the right and left hand knowledge.

The moral of the story was to do, give and help without reward and without others knowing.

The one person i will honour is the person who finds a cure for ra/fibro/cfs. Then we can all be happy.xx

ooo that's a tricky one Allanah.

I agree with Lavender Lady in that it does seem to be the celebrities who get the rewards - no doubt because their fame gets the attention sought by the charities they support - and that in itself is a valuable contribution. Celebrities are also easier to spot when it comes to suggesting names.

Maybe queenie needs some undercover agents to seek out the people who also give so much of their time but without the recognition. Doctors and nurses who take sabbaticals from earning to give their time to 3rd world countries or organisations like Medicine sans frontiers spring to mind but then there are also engineers who give up their time to teach how to dig wells etc. Cor! The list could go on forever.

Unfortunately, it is not the Queen who decides but faceless bods in Whitehall. Nobody knows who they are except the PM and one or two of his cronies. I would imagine there must be times when the Queen wishes she could just strike out the whole list and tell the PM and his faceless pals to start again! LavendarLady x

Lol I bet she would too! There were some "ordinary" people on the list for doing community work too, my mum got an OBE years ago for her charity work !
