Is it ok to take Metronizadol while taking Methotrexate, would be grateful for any advice

I've heard that you should skip your weekly dose of MTX if you're on anitbiotics. Metronizadol is particularly strong! To be honest, I've been on MTX for 3.5 years and never knew you had to skip a week until recently but it makes sense given that MTX suppresses the immune system and you want the antiBs to fight the infection.

Thanks for your help Fruitycake, the metronizadole was prescribed for a tooth abcess so will speak to my dentist

Metronizadole, is for bacterial infections

Methotrexate In treating RA

Both these medications can cause problems in there own right. There are contraindications between the two together

The former medication, is given in 3 different forms. Methotrexate is given in tablet and injection Generally there seems no reason not to use together, although both are effecting your immune system.

One problem you may have is contraindications between NSID, Pain medication Opiate, type, basic analgesic, etc

So these medications would need to be taken into consideration.

These medications would have been scripted by a GP or Hospital so they should have taken into consideration the complete drugs you are taking.

Generally I would imagine if they thought there would be a problem they may have taken you of the METHOTREXATE, while the bacterial infection is cleared, things may need to change if Metronizadole would need to be taken over an extended period of time.

Taking all in consideration and the prescriber knows the medications you are taking at this moment in time I suppose they have thought what were the risks of taking all medications on your script.

So under these circumstances I should imagine all is ok. although you will need to watch for contraindications between these two medications that do not suit every patient in their own right

I would say to you that any problems or any worries should be reported to your GP in the first instance, especially when taking Methotrexate. As I am not a doctor

Thanks very much for your help Bob, I,ll speak to my dentist and get him to prescribe an antibiotic that is suitable to take with methotrexate

Been prescribed this by my dentist in the past. He knew I was on MTX and checked to see if there would be a problem in his reference book.

Now if you are on biological it is a different story. Been advised not to take Cimzia if on antibiotics, ie postpone injection until after finishing the antibiotics.

I would really speak to your GP about what's best to do. We have all had our own experiences about what antibiotics we've been prescribed and whether we're advised to stop MTX or not. But that may not be appropriate for you as we don't know the rest of your medical history, so what's ok for me may be a bad idea for you, it's always best to take advice from a doctor.
