My Rheumy Visit Part 1.

This was my 3rd visit to my Rheumy consultant and it was shocking from the minute we went in till we came out we could not believe this was the same man we have seen twice before, He was rude dismissive and very ignorant even the trainee rheumy nurse felt uncomfortable, I told him I was put on Diclofenic by my GP and there he started stop and stop it n now as he glared into his monitor I was telling since I had started this meds I had not no pain whatsoever, Then he started ranting on about sending me a letter about me going on Sulfasalisine and he arranged an appointment with the rheumy nurse, I just sat there looking at Fran because we had read this letter times because at that time it was important, Fran then said to him where or what do I do when I am going through a ten days of hell with my RA and she continued to tell him the day she came and I was on my hands and knees crying just to get to the toilet again he just sat there glaring at his monitor, Then he gets up to examine me as I am explaining that my right wrist was very weak then he grabs my wrist in a vice like grip which made me cry out and all he said it was a bit tender, For two pins I would have given him Glesca Kiss ( head butt ) part two to follow.Mattcass

Mattcass this sounds like a re-run of my last rheumy experience but I've checked your profile & we can't possibly see the same chap unless your rheumy is at the other end of the country to you.

It was bad enough for me but with your additional health issues this is completely appalling. I'll be interested to see what happens in part two. I'm a bit stunned really. Luce x

Me again ..... even the bit about the sudden change compared to how he came across on the last two appointments: my husband said to my rheumy "it's like seeing a completely different doctor."

I'm stunned by this, where is his compassion and humanity?

Get it off your chest as quickly as possible, we're all here for you and Fran xx

I am totally stunned you have been treated like this.....he should be taken to task for his total lack of compassion & empathy....how dare he treat you like that!

Big hugs to you....xxxxx

Last time I saw the rhumy nurse she was a changed person as well. I think the pressure is getting to them, she did mention that they are supposed to 'use the screen now'. My response was that for when we have the virtual appointments.

It's not nice when you get treated like this more so when you are in a lot of pain. take care.xx

So sorry to hear of yr awful experience. I really can't understand what some of these people are doing in this profession which clearly they are not suited to.

Sorry Matt, you have had such a bad experience. Surprised he went off on one with your wife there, actually! If there is more than one rheumy or registrar(s) who work alongside him, could you request to see one of them next time you are due for a review/appointment? You can ask to see anyone from the team who is there on the day at my hospital? You just have to be prepared to wait a little longer if that consultant has a busy list.

I would have to have it out with him as professionally as possible as I wouldn't want to see him again unless his tune changed, but difficult if he is the only rheumy who can authorise your treatment/do the decision making. Chances are, Matt, if he's been like this with you, he has with other patients too. I used to have to deal with a bully rheumy nurse a few years back who treated me as though I was a buffoon, and called me a liar as the hospital mislaid my blood tests and she phoned me and shrieked I hadn't had them done! Told her I never wanted contact with her again then phoned the main rheumy and asked to never see nurse nasty again! They were so apologetic. Now the rheumy nurses are lovely but sadly overworked. However if it is the main guy who is the offender ... difficult indeed ... but he shouldn't be allowed to upset patients. Even worse when you are having such a bad spell. Good luck. Julie x

It upsets me to hear this as I had a similar experience in a Manchester hospital when I was first getting diagnosed around 3 yrs ago. My consultant was rude, unsympathetic & made me feel even worse when I was feeling scared & vulnerable. No eye contact, he didn't even ever look at or examine my joints. I didn't make a complaint, wish I had now but my head was such a mess with this diagnoses & I was very down. I did, however, tell the nurse I didn't want to see him again and since them I have been seeing the most amazing women who is a Rhuemy nurse.

Good luck to you & I hope your future visits go much better.
