I am taking Hydroxy and Leflunomide

I hung out my washing when the sun was out, I was in the garden a matter of minuits and started itching terribly.

The same thing happened last year - It seems my skin hates the sun- I have to take Telfast, anti histamine , my GP has no idea why it happens. Has anyone any simular symptoms?

Yes! My daughter! Every year Telfast for six months and Piz Bauin anti allergy suncream.

But he couldn't go out in the garden, or BBQ or the beach before so it's a new lease of life for us. Sh started hers two weeks ago. Her doc says her skin just doesn't like the sun. Lucky she's pale lily white skin and blond hair and it suits her. I always worry it how's auto immune problems in her but...... Well nothing I can do xxxx

hi, I too have found that over the last couple of years my skin now does not like the sun. I used to look forward to the summer and holidays abroad as it was great for my joints. now I have to slap on kids sun cream and take anti histamines. ive not been abroad for 2 years and would really like to book up. but im worried my skin will spoil it. so I just might have to stay in uk again.

Thanks for this - I wonder if its the mediaction that is the culprit?

Its a horrible condition- cant enjoy the nice warm sun without coming out in a raging rash.

Hi Caroline, Sheenerweener posted a blog about hydroxy and sun a couple of days ago, after reading it and having a bit of a reaction myself I went straight out and bought some factor 50 for sensitive skin. Now looking forward to people asking me if Im ok as Im so pale through the summer. Just another thing to cope with having RA! Tracyxxx

Mtx makes you sun sensitive and to cover up, also have to wear sun glasses because of eyes being sensitive too.

Chris

Ho such joy!

Thanks for this ;-)

Its worth making sure your rheumatologist knows about your sun sensitivity, and definitely ask them if he thinks its connected. Sun sensitivity is classic for lupus, but its possible to have a mix of RA and lupus (Rhupus) or mixed connective tissue disorder, which the rheumatologist probably wouldn't consider if they didn't know about your sun sensitivity. Of course it could also be totally unrelated, or a side effect of one of the meds.

Do you use high factor sunscreens? Might be worth trying those if you are that sensitive, and using them EVERY time you are going outside, even if its a bit cloudy.

Thank you.

I will get her phoned up tomorrow, Havent see my consultant since last Nov, was ment to see her in Feb but cancelled it.

Thanks xx

I have Piz Buin allergy sun cream. It is in my kitchen at the mo. A very good product. The dermatologists recommend Sunsense F50, which is Australia's number one brand.

I know when I took Sulphasalazine tablets i had constant urticaria. I didn't even have to go out ... Sitting at a window when it was sunny outside was enough to give me itching red skin with hives. Blotchy too especially on the face. It would subside after about two hours.

When I stopped Sulpha the skin stopped all that blotching and itching.
