Hey Nancy, huge congratulations on 6 months smoke free, really well done!

What you are feeling is perfectly normal and you're right, it does suck :( But I promise, you should start feeling some sort of normality very soon (varies from person to person) but usually between the 6 month to 12 month mark that light at end of the tunnel starts to appear.

Bear in mind that your brain is still rewiring, repairing and recovering and is a gradual process. Never doubt that stopping smoking is not worth it. How good will it feel to be almost 2 years smoke free for your 60th birthday :O

Thanks for the kind words. I just never expected to feel a bit of depression associated with quitting. I'm looking for a new job to keep me busier. The quit is very different than I expected. As they say....keep pushing forward!!! Next stop- 7 months!

I started again after 12 years smoke free. I can’t tell you how much I regret it because stopping is so much harder every time. I’m now taking Champix, and feel just so annoyed with myself! I hope you won’t give up on your quit. You did this for a reason.

What you’re feeling is quite normal but it will pass. Think of it as grief and find something - anything! - you love and focus on that to get you though. I focussed on singing, walking and my doggie! Just building as many little moments of happiness into your day as you can helps your mindset shift from the past into the present. I hope this helps a little, I’m sure others are going through the same.

Welcome Jules1975 , well done on getting back on the horse, how far are you along with the champix?

What made you start smoking again after 12 years?

I can understand where you are at 59 !. There is a chemical in nicotine called continine or something like that, it aids with depression and anxiety and they are actually researching it as treatment for depression. It isn't all in your head !!.

Personally it's my belief that is upto us if we smoke or not, are you botherd about the risks etc !. If not, smoke if it makes you happy. I think about starting again everyday, I think it's just a matter of when and not if for me, 8 years quit on the 25 th of this month and I still can't get used to it.

Good luck to ya either way !

I felt the same way. Now I’m almost 6 months out. Hang in there! Honestly I still

want to smoke when I am stressed, I just tell myself “Go ahead you can smoke!” This makes me step back and say nah, you don’t smoke! Good luck.

Awwww, hugs, you ol' Barndog. I'm almost 58 and feel like sleeping my life away sometimes too!!! What the heck is up with that? I think we viewed smoking as one of life's FEW pleasures, emphasis on few. Unfortunately I'm eating too much to cope. So I'm having conversations with myself on how I might cope better. Once I'm retired in a couple years, what is my life going to look like? What am I going to do to keep busy and fill my life up with meaningful things? I haven't found answers yet but I know they will come. Is quitting smoking worth it? A resounding YES. If health isn't your motivator, think of the money you're saving. And keep asking yourself what you can do to fill the void. It usually involves service to others blah blah blah. You know this.

Smoking was not a friend. It sucked the life outta you and your wallet. Why would you ever return to that? These crappy feeling just last a wee while then disappear. Ignore them like you would a playground pest. Stay with not being a smoker any more. Win, win, win.
