My name is david and I'm from Edinburgh/ Ive been smoking for 40 years. I'm a keen photographer, I think nothing of getting up at 4 am in the morning ; packing up my equipment and travelling to capture a sunrise. For the last few weeks ive been struggling with a bad cough / cold and ive missed some great phot oportunites.I don't know what happened but on Monday at 130pm I put out my cigarette and have not had one since. Tuesday I threw out the cigs my wife had bought duty free for me; a 200 pack . Each hour, each cigarette not smoked is making me all the more determined to stay stopped.

First of all welcome to the forum. I would like to say well done David. I too smoked for 40 years and apart from a blip last January I have not smoked since 6th Feb 2012. It can be done and it is never too late.Keep posting and reading this forum it really does help.

Hi David. That's great! You made the decision and it sounds like you're happy with it so I'm sure you'll be completely successful.

As I've said before, medical problems probably make it a little easier to reach the decision to give up. I didn't want to reach that point so I gave up before it happened!

I haven't found it too easy because I actually loved smoking and miss it a lot but I'm now in my second month and Im getting the hang of it.

I had many stops and starts during the past year and this has been my biggest success. It's all due to this group. So well done for finding us. Everyone here's in the same boat which certainly helps.

Soon you'll be able to help other newbies which in turn will help you with your quit.

Hope to see more posts from you soon.

It came as a complete surprise to me. I've never tried to quit before. My wife used to say even a nicotine patch over my mouth wouldn't stop me. Even the thought of quitting usualy makes me light up. I had really bad cravings earlier today so I popped out to the chemist and bought some gum. That's taken the edge off my cravings. After about 5 minuites I was fine fine again.Actualy they had gone by the time I walked to the chemist. Early days I know; but don't want to ever smoke again.

If you don't want to smoke again, then you won't !

Welcome David and congratulations on making the best decision of your life.

My reason for quitting is similar to yours, had a very bad cough and was waking up in the middle of the night not able to get my breath, knew it was the smokes and for the last couple of years I became a very heavy smoker due to life pressures. It was a wake up call literally on 17 September 2015 at 3:00am to put out my last cigarette.

I too never want to smoke again, but it is still going to be an ongoing battle to be ready to attack at all times and not let my / our guard down...

Best of luck, I look forward to reading your progress....
