Hi all. Well I did the marathon yesterday. Finished in 3 hours 54 which I am really pleased with. Was a great day and crowd support was amazing. Legs killing me today haha

That's such an amazing time, what an inspiration! Were you already running before you quit or have you managed to train for the marathon since November? I'm looking to follow in your footsteps :D x

Thanks all for posts. My running number was 50642 if you wanted to see my results on London marathon website (my name is steve too:)

I have done some running before but never a marathon. A few people raised an eyebrow when I said back in November that I was running. "How can a smoker run 26 miles" was what I knew they were thinking. But as a result of my application to run, I realised the following:

1) that stopping smoking seriously improves your health, breathing and circulation

2) it really does help to quit if you have a goal. Not all will want to do something so extreme as a marathon but having your own personal goal helps (health, family, finances) whenever I had a craving, the word marathon always eased that craving

3) I beat my all my colleagues and was only one to get under 4 hours. So I proved all my doubters wrong but on a serious note, it proved that ex smokers do not have to be disadvantaged against people who never smoked. What I mean is your body recovers very quickly after that final cigarette.

Sorry for lengthy post. I am now at 5 month stage and hope my post can be of some assistance to those that have only just recently quit

Well done Woody, medal's heavy isn't it? :)

Great time you got, I was miles behind you at 6h 37m, the day didn't go exactly as planned but I got round and raised a pile for Diabetes UK so shouldn't grumble.

Respect for doing it after what, five months quit?? I did a 5k after four months and couldn't have done much more. Well done again, here's to the next one....
