Method of quit

nsd_user663_51052 profile image

To anyone that's been quit for a year or more now, what method did you use?

I'm interested to see what the most common way to success is on this forum.

I'll try and keep a total and update the thread as we go along.

I'll start then - Cold turkey.

Nonico did it for the Jan 2012 quitters

Here's the link to save you time...

Hawkeye1970, sorry if I'm being a bit slow: what do you mean by extending it to keep it more current?

nsd_user663_54554

Apologies Ets - Nonico's stats were from Jan 2013 I think, so many more current posters will have hit the one year mark since then. Angry Bear and I add two CT quitters to the sample, and I'm sure those using E-cigs will count them as NRT (and they're more prevalent than they were a couple of years back) - they/we all increase the sample size.

Like your intention here, will be good to see an updated set of results :)

Cheers

Ah ok got ya!

Yes it will be good to get some updated results. I just need some people to actually respond to this thread now lol

nsd_user663_51052 profile image
nsd_user663_51052

I would love to know if there is more success with one method over another.

The difficulty in getting an accurate idea is that people disappear so it's hard to keep track.

If you take 20 people quitting today and 10 are NRT and 10 champix and you follow them for a year it would only be accurate if they all stay. If you get 5 champix users who don't come here because they think of smoking it's too hard to get true figures.

It's a pity it can't be done because it may change a lot of theories.

The results will be 1 year+ quitters that still use this forum.

Are you worried that people that use a certain method to quit, might be less inclined to remain on this forum?

I just don't think it could be an accurate analysis.

If you look at all the people making a year post on 24/03/15 and there are say 30. 1f 15 are cold turkey, 10 are champix and 5 NRT you can only assess on them.

If 70 people quit today ie the same day as those above but stop posting after say 3 months they can't be taken into account. If 75% of them take NRT and 25% fail altogether then it swings the balance.

Does that make sense to anyone other than me lol.

No I don't really understand what you're saying.

This is a survey for people that have already been quit for a year or more, right now today. And we're going to see how each of those people quit.

nsd_user663_51052 profile image
nsd_user663_51052

Basically I'm saying you can't get an accurate survey because not everyone who quit will post a year thread.

That's fair enough. But I'm doing my survey purely based on responses to this thread.

My quit date was 23rd Feb 2013.

I started by using patches on and off for a couple of weeks, then used an e-cig for a couple of weeks, then went cold turkey from around 3 months.

Sorry, it's not a very concrete answer really.:rolleyes:

I'm sorry but the statistician in me has to jump in at this point before people who are using NRT despair.

You have no idea what percentage of the original sample were using each method so the results are a little meaningless.

It's like saying 5% of car accidents are caused by drink drivers therefore 95% of accidents are caused by sober drivers so we should all drink before driving.

I see the point you've tried to make, but unfortunately you've made it very badly.

Saying that 5% of car accidents are caused by drink drivers, therefore 95% are cause by sober drivers doesn't make any sense at all. That's like saying being sober CAUSED the accident. But car accidents are made up of 5% drink drivers, 10% driving without due care and attention, 15% medical condition etc.

The sample in this survey, is people who respond to this thread and nobody other than that.

So looking at people who respond to this thread, we'll see what percentage of them quit using what method. That's the only way any survey can be conducted.

I'm not including anybody that may or may not have quit at some point in time using whatever method. Only people who are still sucessfully quit that respond to this thread.

EXACTLY

When you use statistics without context which is what you are doing they turn ludicrous. The drink driving statistic is used in some text books to illustrate the point.

99% of the population are sober drivers so the drunk driver although only 1% of the drivers on the road is responsible for 5% of the accidents. You have to have context.

It's an interesting survey which is why I didn't butt in earlier but of no statistical value and I was just concerned that it would worry people using NRT.

nsd_user663_51052

Eeek,

Now I don't get it. Its a comparison listing for those of us who have recently successfully completed a year quit. It only a guide to let us see which method everyone used.

The purpose is certainly not to advocate a particular quit method as being more successful than others. Each and every one of us had/have the same goal, to successfully quit smoking.

PS

Have read a few more posts, why would people like myself (quit using Patches/NRT) despair or feel 'less special' than someone who has quit using nil.

Hi jenny, that's an interesting question posed - I'm still here but I wouldn't say I'm 'active', more passive and occasionally dormant :D actually, but still registered and look in now and again.

For me the one year milestone signalled a big reduction in my activity here - this forum is great for education, support, distraction and the company of peers, and the need for the first three dimished significantly for me from around nine months. Then the penthouse, then...well what exactly?

There's only so much advice and encouragement one can give day in, day out, as your quit moves from centre stage to a small sideshow in your life. I'd still like to offer support and advice where I can but also don't want to be a stuck record either, so for now I'm happy offering the occasional contribution or opinion to the forum in general, or if I can offer something to someone in response to a specific need.

All good! x :)

Why do you always sound like you want to punch my lights out

I'm going by this thread only which is what you are doing

The majority of people that have responded to this thread haven't quit by cold turkey.

I sound a little harsh sometimes, because I just try to do a little survey on the forum to have a bit of fun, and out of hundreds of people that read the thread, there's always that one that has to be negative.

We all know that statistics can be manipulated in all kinds of ways. That they can be made to favour anything in reality. Everybody knows that. But most people just treat the little thread on a forum online as a bit of fun to pass the time.

Don't take life too seriously. All the best.

I like this Thread too:). Thanks Ets

I've been quit for 18 months now, and in the early days was absolutely glued to the Forum. Without the shadow of a doubt, (along with patches and a supportive family) this Forum has been instrumental in my successful quit.

I'll be ever grateful to everyone for the encouragement and support I received.

For me, I think it was the 'One Year' mark when I stopped using the Forum as much and posted less. (The Forum was/is additive and I was quite often in trouble for not being communicative!!! I also remember my son coming home from Uni many a night and no dinner ready, he said it was fair play during 'Wimbledon Fortnight' but blah blah.......

I personally didn't need the support 12 months on, by this stage I rarely thought of smoking except whilst on here. (Newbies, yes you too will feel like this one day, promise).

As far as supporting goes, I kinda take a back seat as I feel there's only so much I can say without sounding repetitive! Its so nice to see friendships form, just love to see the newbies going through the journey and supporting each other. Now and then I'll post if I think I can help someone going through a difficult/ particular scenario similar to my own experience and hopefully give advice and emphasise.

Still like to check in though, we have lovely, caring people on here and some real characters and comedians!!!

Oops, sorry for the long post. Jenny, bet you wish you hadn't asked!!!!!!!

This is a great thread Ets and results will be very interesting :D

Considering how many people pass through this forum, you might think someone, the Mods perhaps ,would monitor who registers, starts a quit and succeeds a quit and who fails,by percentages what method they use etc,and would be able to supply stats,in a neat Excel table for people to peruse.:)

Statistics are very hard to come by as to who does what in real life regarding smoking when it comes to smoking so all power to your elbow Ets for doing this.

Cheers Max :)

a couple of years ago, when I was a bit bored, I ran a few searches through the member database trying to see how many of the 'hello everyone I've just quit smoking' turned up a year later in the 'please make room in the penthouse hot-tub'

Sadly, and maybe it's not a surprise, it seemed to be narrowing down to the infamous less than 10% again.

Of course it's nothing to do with this thread as it had no interest in quit method. It was simply a hopeless attempt to prove that this forum was better than the NHS..
