Day 16

Hi,

I'm new to all this blogging malarkey, but here's my story if anyone is interested!

Its day 16 today, turning to day 17 at 21:30 tonight!

I smoked for 18 years, I am asthmatic too so really a big no-no!

I have quit before, when I was younger, and lasted for a year, but always found an excuse to go back to it!

This time it wasn't my decision to quit, my husband recently (well 16 days ago) had to go into hospital fro an operation on his mouth, he was advised not to smoke afterwards, so being a good wife (cringe) I thought Id help him out and quit for a bit myself... Well, I am loving being a non smoker! I am not gong to lie, I have found it hard, the first 9-10 days were hell! Its been a s**t time too, my nan died, my husband had an op, and I've been ill myself, all in the last 16 days, but I figure if I can get through all of that without smoking, then I'll never need it, right!?!

So, I wont bore you further, just simply wish to say that I am in this for the long haul, I am totally committed to staying off the cigs forever, and if anyone is having a bad day or needs some support, then lets do this together!

Keep Strong people...We Can Do This!

Hi Adel

Wow you are awesome - I couldn't have gone through all that and stayed quit so soon after stopping.

Seems you are a bit like me. I don't use social network sites and only joined this after the first couple of weeks because it was helping me so much.:D:D

Seriously, welcome to the forum from me too. So glad you've taken the plunge and posted. Everyone is lovely here and most of them are barking mad to boot :) so all in all it's a very nice place to be indeed.

Many congratulations on maintaining your quit under such difficult and challenging circumstances. :)

I've got a bit of a question...this might be a bit disgusting so look away if you like.... Phlegm...I need to discuss! Ha.

As I mentioned, I am asthmatic, and just recently had a bad cold, but I have noticed that just this week I seem to have a lot ermm gunk on my chest...is this normal for 3 weeks in??

Please advise! ha, and sorry if that's a bit rank!

Also, a MASSIVE WELL DONE to everyone on the Quit, I am proud of all of you! We can do this! (posts iphone emoji of flexed muscle) :)

Method

Oh...and I am using an ecig, reducing the nicctine levels down next week, lets see how that goes!!

Hi Adel

My cough has improved or at least changed since I stopped. I don't wake up in the middle of the night coughing so hard that the bed is bouncing. Or have the morning spasms of coughing up phlegm either.

What I do have now is a constant almost trickle of a cough bringing small quantities of phlegm up. I think this is my lungs now recovering and clearing out the debris.

From what I have read this can go on for a few months

Hiya :)

I'm sorry you have been having a rough time, it's not ever easy but when you're quitting on top it must have been a struggle. *But* it is great that you got through without smoking, it shows you seriously want to do this and that's fab!!

You can definitely do this :D We all can!! :D :D

Phlegm

Ahh thank you Andy & Max... On previous quit attempts I didn't really cough much up, but I'm happy that the crap is coming off of my lungs!

Another point I would like advice on...weight!

I have been on a diet for 9 months, lost 31lb so far, since quitting smoking I seem to be at a stable, I exercise 5 times a week for 40 mins a time ( Crazy I know, I don't enjoy it) and track all of the food that I eat, but I don't seem to be shifting anything else...Don't get me wrong, I am not overly bothered, as I know that quitting smoking is the priority and I am proud that I am managing that, just I read today that it can take 12-18 months for your metabolism to return to normal after quitting!

If anyone has any tips on how to keep those extra lb's from returning, then lets all share!

@ Gemma-lou - I noticed that you were having a bad day yesterday, YOU CAN DO IT!! Please don't give up the quitting, its definitely not worth it in the long run, think of all that money you will save if nothing else!! :) xx

Hi Adel

Sorry but I can't answer the weight loss thing. I am in the process of turning into the Incredible Blob myself.:(

I'm giving it another couple of weeks then I will look at what and how much I am eating if I am still off the weed.

BTW - 2 days out of last 3 have I felt pretty good with it all so maybe getting there :):):)

Spend your dollar!!

Gemma-lou... I booked a holiday last week, and the money I save on fags will be paying it off in 11 weeks! Now that is a way to make you appreciate quitting!! A week in the sun or smelling like an ashtray...Hmmm... not a tough choice is it! HA! ;) x

Hiya Andy,

Yes that is the worst thing about quitting, putting on weight makes you feel **** about yourself, which doesn't help with the Quit does it! I am trying my best not to 'treat' myself too often, although I am a chocolate fiend!! Best to get the quit out of the way I think, then worry about the weight...! :)

What day are you on now Andy? I see a lot of people saying week 3 is the 'moody' period, but I DEFINATELY had that last week, so onwards and upwards!

nsd_user663_61432 profile image
nsd_user663_61432

Hi Adel

I'm on Day 27 and Yes when I think about it I was moody last week and perhaps the week before.

Main source of moodiness was that no one else around me at home smokes and I felt isolated and grumpy with them cos they didn't understand what I was going through. Hence joining this forum - life saver .:D:D

Feeling much happier this week - in fact just been in hysterices with my 21 YO Daughter about what I would be giving my OH for Valentines Day

:):):):):)

You're going great guns by the way

That's what I like to hear Andy, happy people having a laugh with their nearest and dearest! I have a 21 year old brother, such a sweet age, just starting out but thinking they know everything, ha, if only!

What was the conclusion for the present? I've got my hubby 3 pairs of shorts and some FIFA gaming points!! (Don't ask) Romantic eh? ha ha.

DAY 27!!! WOW! You must be so proud of yourself!! Just shy of a month, that is bl**dy amazing!! BIG GOLD STAR!!

It would be flowers but we are going away next week - She is on a diet so won't thank me for Chocolate or such like. I'm not allowed to go shopping for clothes for myself alone so getting anything in that department is out.

Any suggestions welcome

Tips erm keep your brain busy so smoking thoughts dont creep in. Dont talk to me about weight gain lol more like boob gain. Read my thread lol x

HA HA HA! Christ I don't think I could cope with that, bigger bras are expensive enough as it is aren't they!! ha ha.

So you are into month 2? That is great! How do you feel now? I found the last week hard, I was exceptionally moody, screaming at my poor Hubby, but I feel much better this week (Changed my contraceptive to though so think that helped...sorry men that are reading this thread!) This week though Im like a new woman, feeling happy and healthy, determined to kick it for good this time! x

From the Urban Dictionary

Moobs

"Can be used as a form of communication when jiggled properly."

I don't like to be anti-social but that is one conversation I'd like to give a miss

:p:p:):)

nsd_user663_61445 profile image
nsd_user663_61445

Ha ha, yes lets get off of the moobs/boobs thing!

So, cravings...I think I have been quite fortunate with these, I don't ever really 'crave' a cig, however, triggers, crikey! I hadn't thought about them for a few days, but got home last night and was feeding the cats, as usual, and suddenly thought 'Oh Ill have a cig in a sec' then thought, oops, I don't smoke! ha.

Funny how they just creep up on you isn't it!

My Dad quit smoking 10 years ago, and he said he still gets the odd trigger even now, obviously he would never contemplate smoking, but goes to show they can pop up at any point!

Is anyone else using an ecig??

nsd_user663_61432 profile image
nsd_user663_61432

Yep - I tried one before but it made me feel ill.

I think it supplied the Nicotine but didn't quench the need for the "smoke hit" so I tended to overdo it.

However great fun annoying puritanical non smokers by using in pubs etc. I think that they have now been banned in some places because of the complaints.

nsd_user663_61445 profile image
nsd_user663_61445

I've not tried using it in a pub/restaurant yet, I suppose because you wouldn't normally smoke there I feel ok with not using it!

I haven't had an alcoholic drink yet though since I quit, so I think that helps too, that will be my hardest moment as the 2 go hand in hand for me, luckily I don't drink very often these days so I'm avoiding it for as long as possible!

nsd_user663_61432 profile image
nsd_user663_61432

I've been OK with alcohol - but must cut down on that too. :o

I have been avoiding driving too much. I was terrible for chain smoking when driving - especially for long distances.

Will be towing the caravan down to the New Forest next week so that will be a test for me.

Adel, well done on losing such a lot of weight as well as quitting. I know how difficult it can be to combine dieting with quitting as I am in the same boat. Good for you- that's fantastic :D

We have a losing weight thread going on the forum too, so do feel free to join in if you wish. We have a weekly virtual weigh-in on a Monday.

Quitting does apparently have a small effect on metabolism but from what I have read, there's a lot of myths about how significant the effect really is in practice. I found that immediately after quitting my weight loss slowed down (that was admittedly over Christmas but I was really careful in what I ate and drank even during Christmas week) but it sped up again within a couple of weeks. You've been losing weight for some time so you may have hit a plateau coincidentally but I would be willing to bet that it's probably related to the quit and that it will pass very quickly.

Incidentally, I am enjoying the way that all roads now lead to norks :D. I blame that Debbie. :)

Hi Skiddaw,

Thank you for the reply, its so nice to know that someone is in the same boat! I normally weigh in on a Friday morning, and have literally stayed the same for 4-5 weeks now, so like you say, could just be the diet in general. I am finding though that I am PEMANANTLY hungry since quitting, but I am fighting the urge to eat as I don't want to put on too much weight, but it is bl**dy hard isn't it!

I have changed my normal lunch for something a bit different today, still low fat low calorie, so fingers crossed it will fill me up a bit more!

I will definitely have a look at your weight loss feed, do you have a link for it? I am rubbish at finding things on here! :o

How are you finding your quit this time around? Determined to do it once and for all??

Hiya Bluebell,

Thank you for the reply! :)

Yes I think gaining a few pounds is unfortunately inevitable, but its got to be worth it to say that I'm a non smoker right!

That sounds good already, ha ha.

How are you finding the cravings/triggers? I am just getting through them by focusing on the positives of quitting, like not smelling like an ashtray, I already cant stand the smell of smokers, sounds awful doesn't it as I was one until 3 weeks ago! ha ha.

Keep up the good work Bluebell, we can do it!!

Hi Adel. I don't seem to have cravings or triggers now. :D:D

Always smoked in the car before, but the first drive after I quit was really a huge thing for me. I suddenly felt free, realised I could do it !!

I bought some NiQuitin 1.5 mg lozenges (on recommendation of another poster here) and had one very occasionally.

It just gets better and better, (apart from the weight thing:( ).

You are doing brill Adel, keep it up. :) bb x

Hi Adel,

If you look in the 'diet & keep fit' part of the forum, Jenny starts a new weight loss thread every Monday so we can record how much we have lost. I think you've done brilliantly to lose as much as you have and if you can just maintain your current weight until your quit is fully established you'll have done fantastically well. :)

It is a pain though when you know you've been 'good' and not lost anything. Can you get more physically active perhaps? That might kick-start things off again.

And yes- I am determined that this is my 'forever' quit. I had only managed to go 48 hours prior to this one and as I am now in Month 3 I am certainly never going back. :D

Hi Steve,

Yes I suppose we all have good and bad days!

38 days? That is amazing!! What was your motivator to do it? I have never really enjoyed smoking, it was just habit, and a boredom threshold that is ridiculously low, so if I was bored I'd just go for a cig!

Now I just have a couple of puffs on my ecig, but I want to try and cut down on using that to make it easier in the long run!

Keep going!!

Hi Skiddaw,

I am currently doing 40 minutes of Zumba every weekday morning, I cant really manage any more as I work full time, but I think if I keep that up, then even if I don't lose weight, then I'll lose inches right..??

I know I will be gutted if I put on a lot of weight, so I am determined not to keep snacking, but if its a choice between a mars bar and a cig...the mars bar is gonna win!! :)

3 months?? How do you feel now? Can you notice the difference?? You should be really proud of yourself, that is a sterling job there!! :D

nsd_user663_60964 profile image
nsd_user663_60964

Well, If Zumba doesn't do it nothing will :)

And I know what you mean. There is a limit to what you can fit in. I work full time too (having a quiet afternoon today hence am sneakily on here instead of doing what I should be doing :D) though I am lucky in that I can walk to and from work which helps on the exercise front as well as swimming regularly as there is a pool close by and I walk a lot anyway (including hill walking when I get the chance :)).

But hey- a few Mars Bars aren't going to hurt and I quite agree- far better that than the Demon. :)

Thank you!! Yes, I do feel heaps, heaps better than I did before quitting. Funny really because I didn't think I felt any worse for smoking (other than being a bit wheezy sometimes at night, which was really what finally made me decide to quit). Now, though, I realise what a physical toll it was taking on me. I have so much more energy, a much higher exercise tolerance, much better lung capacity, sleep better, skin and hair are better, I feel younger, my teeth are losing the years of stains...need I go on! :D It really is worth all the pain.

Ha ha, yes I too am skiving whilst I should be working, oh well!

I can feel the difference on my chest already, I don't have the little asthma attacks that I was having in the night before, I feel generally much more healthy, and I'm loving not smelling like cigarettes, it's such a nasty smell and I've always hated it, now I don't have to put up with it! :)

I'm glad you do lots of exercise too, it's to fit in work, exercise and run a home isn't it! But worth it all in a Sunday when I get to relax!

Adele

Well I had a vague intention of giving up on my 40th. That date came and went without so much as an attempt.

Ditto 41.

Then I decided to give it a go in the New Year. I figured I'd wait until I was back at work...idle hands being the devil's playthings, and all that.

Lo and behold, I found myself in Boots on Jan 6th...where I took the fact that Nicquitin patches were on special offer as a "sign", lol :D

Quit the same day, and haven't looked back since!

Ah that's brilliant Steve!

I only really quit because my husband wouldn't be able to smoke for a while and he needed the support, I really REALLY didn't think I was ready, and to be honest I was kind of dreading it, but here I am nearly 3 weeks in and still going strong!

But like Ive said I never really liked it, and now Im using the money to pay off a holiday, so that is my motivation to keep on going, plus obviously the massive health benefits!!

How are you finding the patches? I quit for a year previously using them and a no smoking clinic through my doctors, I just wish I'd never started again, but I was younger then, and when having a drink I made the fatal mistake of 'I'll be fine just having one'!! Hence why I haven't had a drink yet...until tomorrow that is!! So that will be my big test, but I think I'm strong enough now to get through a few drinks without a cig...!!

Fingers crossed!! :D
