This time cannot fail (even though i am really struggling)

Hello all,

I have never registered on any forum before but was reading through this one and decided maybe it was worth a go.

I am on day 2 today and i am confident i can hold out even though it is hard, especially at the times when i would always have a cigarrette.

I have tried quitting many times in the past and always eventually gone back to them. Some times i know i will fail even as i attempt to quit and others i talk myself around to buying them when i am stressted or angry etc.

I must succeed this time. I have made so many promises to my wife in the past that i have broken that when it comes to smoking i see it in her face that she just doesnt beleive me anymore. I have even resorted to buying two packets of cigarrettes at once in the past to have a pack for show so i can say i am only having the odd one, and a pack that she doesnt know about that i dip into secretly. That is how sneakly i have been in the past.

We recently bought a house together that is in desperate need of fixing up. I get so guilty when i have to say to her we will have to wait until we get paid again to do that bit of work because we cant afford it and then i am popping up the road to buy cigarrettes. She has never thrown that in my face and never accused me of being a hypocrite.

These are the reasons why i will sicceed this time. I am no longer going to feel like a villain. I am no longer going to feel guilty and chastise myself for this. I want to look my wife in the eyes and be able to honestly say i havent smoked today and i wont tomorrow either. Yes we can afford a holiday next year because i wont be spending all out money on cigarrettes.

Sorry to waffle on just feels nice to tell strangers the truth. Honestly i am in agony at the moment and the corner shop is singing my name but i know that today i have the strength to ignore it. Lets see what tomorrow brings!!!

Wow Jarvis I'm really touched with your reasons. Your wife is a very lucky lady! Quitting is really tough - we all struggle with fighting off the urges but it will be worth it in the end.

This is also the first forum I have ever joined and it is wonderful to be able to talk to complete strangers who start to feel like real friends over time. There are some truly amazing people on here and it's a great help to have all the support.

Well done for making the decision to quit - we will all be here to help you every step of the way so just post on here when you need/want to and someone will be here to listen.

Are you using any form of NRT or e cig? Or are you just going cold turkey? I m using an e cig and nicotine gum at present.

Chat to you soon and welcome to the forum!

Sarah

Thank you for your comments thats really nice to hear. I hope to be a support for others as well as i get further into the task.

I am not on any nicotine replacement. I have tried a couple of things in the past but didnt really like it. I never got rid of that feeling of missing out and missing the act of smoking a cigarrette.

I figured if i am going to feel that i am missing out anyway i may as well do it without nicotine full stop ha ha.

I know several people who have used patches or gum etc and been very successfull, so i am not saying it is no good. I am just trying the cold turkey method.

A trick for me is to not think of forever. That is usually when i feel what is the point. I am just thinking of today. If i think of never again i am likely to miss them more and that is when i talk myself back into buying them again.

Hi Jarvis, I think your wife will not only be proud of you but she will I am sure Love you all the more for quitting what is an essentially life threatening habit, also as a smoker you will only find out how bad you smell when you give it up and smell it on others, my OH has never smoked but never once nagged me to quit, but now I know he is so glad I did..

I go in shops now and see the price of cigs and wonder how the hell any one can afford to smoke, I have never regretted giving up and like you I stopped CT, I also did what you are going to do I said I am not smoking today and it really worked for me.

Just think every pack of cigs could be the start of a new kitchen/bathroom or just some new wallpaper.

This site will give you all the support you will need.

Hey Vicki,

Just keep telling yourself that when times get tough. I dont have any children but i guess your daughter is a massive motivation for you. My dad gave up smoking when i was young and at the time i didnt think anything of it really. I am now so proud and glad he made that decision because he is still my hero and i am so glad to still have him.

You can do it Vicki, just keep pushing along. Each day is a great achievement and when times are tough there is always someone here to help you along.

Hi Jarvis, I just wanted to add my 'welcome to the forum' to a fellow CT quitter, I'll watch your journey with interest and may even get the chance to contribute to it if I can! Just maybe not with song choices :D

Great reasons, great start, and good luck!!

Hi jarvis

Im also a CT quitter and altho I think it may be harder this way in the beginning at least this way you get rid of all the nicotine from your system nice and quick.
