Many of the "Quit Benefits Timelines" published to encourage us to stop smoking seem to confuse smoking and nicotine dependence. How many have you read that say "within x hours your body will be free of all nicotine...keep taking your NRT if you're tempted to have a cigarette" and quote other benefits which we probably aren't going to see (or, at least see to the same extent) if we're still hooked on nicotine? Taking nicotine on its own without the cigs is much, much, much better...and some of us (including me) are happy to accept that that is our first very big step: we understand the difference so why the lack of complete honesty? Maybe the answer is that "all or nothing" has been the UK Government's stance until recently whereas the concept of "harm reduction" is now gaining acceptance.

The entire quit smoking industry confuses this.
Smokers confuse it, doctors confuse it, smoking cessation councillors confuse it and my dog woofed last night that she was a little confused too.
NHS Smokefree's entire foundations for quit methods are cast on the poor stratum that is the farcical Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependency.
Now that there's a massive growth in the sales of E-Cigs including their mainstream advertising policy the whole thing is going to get even more confusing.
