Where are the benefits?

Hi,

My partner and I have both quit smoking - my partner last year and me this year (about 1 month ago now).

But neither of us have experienced any of the supposed benefits of stopping smoking.

Things do not smell or taste any different, my partner is still wheezing (in fact more than when smoking) and I've never felt so ill in my life. I've broken out in spots and have had a nonstop cold for a couple of weeks when I've never had a single day sick beforehand.

To be honest the only reason I stopped smoking was because of these benefits - money wasn't really an issue for me.

If things carry on the way they are I'm just going to start smoking again.

Hi Yllek,

Sorry to hear that you're feeling low about the whole thing.

Have either you or your partner used NRT to help with the quit, or are you both cold turkey?

First of all, your partner should probably go to the doctor about his wheeze. If he had been smoking for a long time and a large amount of cigarettes a day, is it possible that some more lasting damage has been caused that may need longer than a year to rectify?

The only thing that confuses me is that the taste and smell senses change quite soon after you quit, so I'm not sure why your partner hasn't noticed this benefit.

In relation to your quit, I suffered with a cold when I quit smoking and also found a lot of "gunge" being brought up off my chest, which I imagine is the same for every quitter. I've only started suffering with the spots in the last couple of weeks, but they seem to be disappearing now.

I think you just need to remember what you've been doing to your body for all these years. Yes, the first few weeks are tough because you're fighting cravings as well as feeling miserable due to your body getting rid of the nasty posons. But it does get better.

I hope this has helped and it begins to get easier for you both :)

Hi Yellk....whatever you do, do not start smoking again. I agree with Karri. Your partner may be suffering from COPD or even worse. Go to the Dr for tests NOW!!!

The fact that your partner didn't get better was because he/she was around you who was still smoking. I was away from my partner for a couple months and felt much better. Now I am back and am feeling the effects of 2nd hand smoke.

I have COPD and let me tell you, it doesn't get better unless you stay away from smokers and follow the Drs orders. I am going through Re-hab now to learn how to breath again...the proper way, not the smokers way.

As far as the money goes....it will buy you a fancy casket when they bury you for smoking instead of quitting. As a Cancer survivor and having Empysema I know my days are numbers. I smoked until it was almost as bad as it could get. I can not reverse the damage I have done but I have at least stopped it...ppat
