I failed a breath test

Hi! I'm new here and I need some help. I stopped smoking 6 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago my carbon monoxide breath test showed '1' and I was so proud of myself but at my appointment today I did a carbon monoxide breath test and it came up with a reading of '9' which means that according to the machine I had been smoking  . It was awful ! I didn't know what to say really. I really hadn't smoked at all for last 6 weeks and it made me look as if I was lying .So now I feel quite humiliated really and also confused! Why would I have failed the test? I called my husband and told him about it ,I was hoping for some support... and he said : 'you smoked' .He well knows that I did not smoke and if it was to be a joke it was a stupid one. I really needed support and he let me down :(.

Any thoughts? The silly thing is I felt like going to buy cigarettes as I was so upset! But after all I started just cry :(.

Hang in there!

I haven't had one of these tests, so I don't really know how they work, but hold on and don't give in!

It sounds bizarre that this should happen, but I have no clue about what can affect a carbon monoxide test (apart from the obvious). Could their machine have been broken?

Aww. Bless you. My last breathing test showed 7 and was told even though you give up smoking, you can get carbon dioxide fumes from car exhausts so if you happen to be in heavy traffic I think that may have an effect. She also listed other causes but can't remember. I'm only on my 5th day of quitting so you are brilliant to have gone 6weeks. Lots of support on here. Other more experienced people will help if you keep coming to this site.

Take care

Thank you all so much for your support. It is nice to have someone on my side :) especially when the nurse is not nice and my husband is stupid

What they said!

Stitch, I too am a stupid husband and make jokes in poor taste to Mrs Hawkeye, who offers rude gestures and makes me do jobs and the school run in return.

Please don't take this seriously, for heaven's sake you're a full SIX WEEKS into your quit! You have every right to feel proud, accomplished and really very darned good about yourself right now, that's a long time. The machine is clearly faulty, your husband is clearly a typical bloke, and you should be celebrating like mad!

Well done on six weeks, congratulations. That's what's important here, stay strong and committed. Great stuff Stitch!

Pollution

Agree with the others who say that readings on Co2 devices can be affected by traffic pollution. My reading after 1 week of quitting was 4, then the next week was down to 2 and this week after 5 weeks of not smoking was back up to 4. The pharmacist said air and traffic pollution would cause such a reading. I had been stuck in very heavy traffic on the drive there so the explanation makes sense to me.

Don't be upset by horrible nurses and stupid husband ( he can't help it he's just a man;)) And well done:)

Genuinely thought you were talking about an alcohol breath test...

Anyway, you didn't smoke so ignore it. You're doing great, so keep at it.. Just stop sucking on those car exhaust pipes ;)

I go to a stop smoking group once a week, normally my reading is around a 3.

But one week it was a 9 and like you I was disappointed about it,

Since then my reading has been back down to 3

I am the same as you in the fact that I have not smoked.

Thank you all for your support. I feel much better now :) After 20 years of smoking... I'm actually doing good. And yes -I have been stuck in traffic -practically every day...

All of you have opened my eyes - I stopped smoking for myself and the children - not for the stupid machine reading .

Thank you all again :)
