First Quit

Well, I've been reading these posts all evening, they all look really inspiring!!

I've made the decision to go cold turkey tonight. I do want to quit but this is my first attempt and am worried that I am setting myself up for failure.

REALLY think it's a horrible disgusting habit BUT, I'm worried I've decided to quit for the wrong reasons. Basically, I'm skint!! At the grand d age of 27, I'm back in full time education, living on £80 a week (harder when I've enjoyed the luxury of a full time wage). Ive worked out that i spend roughly £42 a week on fags!! So, something's gotta go & I've decided it's the fags. At the minute, I'm really determined, I have one fag left, and usually, this would fill me with utter panic & I'd be out in my pj's looking for a 24 hour shop, but, I'm calm and don't actually feel that phased by it. I am however, worried about getting up in the morning and facing the day. Should I have my last fag? Save it for the worst case scenario (thinking better to keep this one, than to cave & but a pack of 20?!)

Argh I don't know.... What I do know is that I have to try this, I'm just not sure that I can succeed but after reading the posts on here, will take it all one day at a time.

Apologies for the essay...wish me luck!!

Hi Katie :)

It's scary how much fags cost isn't it? Another fab reason to stop smoking, especially when it's using half your weekly money

Like Max says, put your fag money somewhere you can see it mount up so you can see a real benefit to it and definitely bin that last fag 'cos there's no such thing as "just one" unfortunately.

Good luck and keep posting here for help and support - am sure I couldn't have got so far without it!!

Welcome to the forum.

Whatever the main reason is for quitting, it's the best thing any of us can do. You're not the first person who has been motivated by the cost of smoking, it's as good a reason as any to kick this ridiculous habit into touch.

Now you need to work on getting your head in the right place. Focus on the postives of what you're doing. Understand the addiction, figure out your strategies for coping when the urge to smoke strikes (this forum is a godsend!). Take it one hour at a time if you have to - you can not smoke for the next hour, right? Of course you can. That's all you need to worry about, and before you know it, you'll have done a day... two days... the milestones will start racking up.

Get to twelve weeks and you'll have saved yourself £500! Good grief. And you'll have stopped poisoning yourself and filling your lungs with tar and carcinogens, which is a pretty good sideline bonus I'd say :D

You know it makes sense. Go for it.

Helen

Thanks!

Thanks for the support! It's driving me mad but I'm still going strong!!!

If I can make it through the day, it'll be a miracle

You CAN do it! Just do ANYTHING other than smoke. I'm finding drinking loads of water and chewing gum and mints are helping to ease the cravings. just try to do anything that takes your mind off of it for another 5 minutes. You will get through the day, even if you have to take it minute by minute, you can do it. Don't give up!

Water really does help, and sugar free gum is fab too.

Was loading up on water for the first few weeks, and of course it helps your body to flush out all the toxins from the fags!! Ooh and it stops you eating your body weight in cake :p

I've also heard that frozen grapes and carrot sticks are good...

Of course, in the early days I thought to hell with that and ate werthers chewy toffees and viennese whirls :D

Lol Hels! I have thought 'to hell with it' too, and have eaten quite an impressive number of cakes and marshmallows today. :)

Well done so far Katie. It won't be a miracle if you make it through the day- it'll be a result of you making some good decisions, despite temptation. You're doing great, keep going :)

I want a viennese bloody whirl now, and I don't even have the excuse of quitting, I just want to eat cake.

Well I'm still at it. Not caved yet BUT I'm now finding it really, really hard. Please tell me the first 24 hours is the worst as I'm not sure I can cope much longer. I feel really restless, and, at times light headed.

Been really trying to keep busy but struggling now

Awwww Katie. All sounds normal to me. I'm hugely light-headed, not even convinced I'm safe to drive really

How are you doing today?

I'm up and down today. Going through phases of thinking I'll happily never smoke again. To having to fight the urge to go the shop!!

I'm irritable too, and the other half is clearly irritated at my irritability!

Other than that I'm fine haha
