Smoking cessation research... Can you help?

I am currently developing a self regulation questionnaire for smoking cessation ( hopefully to be used in the future to gauge people's motivations to stop smoking or enter smoking cessation treatment).

This preliminary survey is looking at exploring smoking behaviors and attitudes to quitting smoking. This survey will form part of my work towards a PhD at Bangor University, Wales on behaviour change.

The survey is completed anonymously, can be saved part way through and takes around 15 minutes to complete.

There are 4 pages in the questionnaire, page 1 consists of mainly personal detail questions (e.g., age, gender, number of cigarettes smoked per day) whereas pages 2, 3 and 4 will ask you to rate the extent to which you agree or disagree with a number of statements about smoking/giving up smoking.

If you have time to fill it in I would be really really grateful.

Many thanks and best wishes with become a non-smoker!

Most of this questionaire is about being a smoker right now - the people on this site have stopped (some today, some years ago), therefore the questions do not apply to us - you are targetting the wrong crowd or need two separate sets of questions, one for smokers, one for non smokers/ex smokers!!! (eg question: Cigarettes control me - answer last year: yes, answer now: no)

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,

thanks very much for your comment. Youre right about the questionnaire, I guess its a general 'attitudes to smoking cessation' kind of compendium and I have skewed it so that it probably is more appropriate to people NOW considering giving up rather than successful quitters. But hopefully quitters can still remember their frame of mind while they were preparing to quit. In future perhaps Ill have to make this more explicit in the instructions.

But thanks very much for taking the time out anyway, it is much apprectaied,

Best,

Caoimhe

Hi Caoimhe,

I tried to fill it out with my mind where it was over 18 months ago, but quite honestly I'm not at all sure if it reflects reality. Even if a person's core personality doesn't change much after the age of five, their perception of themselves can change quite radically over time.

I agree with Dave it's not really the right forum, unless you specifically request that only members who have quite less than one month ago respond. Alternatively, you can add a question about time since a person quit and do some statistical ****yses to determine if those who quite within time slot x to y differ significantly in their responses to those who quit > y.

As Austin once pointed out to me, typically the samples here are statistically irrelevant (often <20 samples total), so hopefully you targeting the survey at many different sources.

Good luck with the research!

Alex.

Ph.D. thesis research

Hello Kyomi,

Tried to reach you at your e-mail address at the Uni. with some comments on your research but kept getting delivery failure reports. I like others commented on the fact that you were addressing the wrong group of people. However I tried to answer the questionnaire from the perspective of a person beginning to attempt to stop smoking.

Could I suggest that you contact something like Smokeline or similar organisations who have more experience of people wanting to quit.

Regards

Thanks

Hi,

thanks for the further comments,

Yes we are addressing a number of different groups with the same items and will at a later date be targeting specific groups more narrowly. As in social smokers/ heavy smokers/ early quitters/ ex-smokers. Right now its early days and we are going to try to look at what aspects seem the most relevant to focus on in compiling an intervention action plan with regards to people's motivation to stop.

Thanks again

Best,

Caoimhe
