My last bout of smoking lasted about six years. During that entire time, I never bought a carton of cigarettes, because to do that, in my mind, made me a smoker who would never quit.
Buying them one pack at a time allowed me to maintain the illusion that I was just about to quit and didn't want to have to throw any away.
So I spent far more than I would have had I purchased by the carton, although that's water under the bridge now.
Now, I "buy" cigarettes no pack at a time. Much cheaper that way!
When I first started smoking again many years ago, I would only buy packs of 10, as that made it seem like I was smoking much less, therefore I could easily quit when I wanted. The fact I was just buying twice as many packets didnt seem to register! In the end, I ended up going back to buying 20's anyway, so seemed a pretty pointless exercise in the end! And like you, it just ended up meaning I spent much more cash.
For the first time in many years, I didnt really give a flying monkeys how much fags went up in the budget, which was nice!!
