This is day 5, well here we are, the good and the bad.

The bad first, sleep is all over the place, short term memory isn't as good as it has been (although that could be attributed to quitting other things too, I feel it is the quitting cigs this time) I'm grumpy, my patience (externally) is a lot less than usual (internally more so than externally), the cravings were almost ever-present yesterday, my bowels are off, I don't know if that is through quitting though as other things are going on there too. I couldn't keep still yesterday either, concentration was hard to maintain. My throat is clogged and clammy.

Now the good:

I'm not smoking, I'm already reducing the risk of myriad diseases, I have more money to spend on the family.

I'm eating better, the chemical imbalances and rebalances will realign. My throat is actually clearing and all the muck is coming up and out of my lungs.

I'm withdrawing from what should be a Class AA drug, I'm doing ok :)

I've also given up coffee, except for one in the morning, and another substance too.

Keep on keeping on!

Hi, it sounds like you are doing really well . the main thing is you are off the fags! brilliant! all the other stuff is really normal, and if there are other reasons for it , then the quit and the other stuff will all emphasise each other somewhat. But, it will all work through eventually. Some of it may get more intense before it eases, and before the good feelings kick in, but it's only for a few days so stick with it.

I'm on day 16 now; sleep still a bit off, energy still lowish, but am more awake in the mornings, cravings easier and less frequent, cough and wheeze gone, worry gone....and i've just had the best tasting garlicky mushroom with my breakfast, ever; things are tasting so different. Still drinking too much coffee, but, hell, it got me through the first two weeks.

Hilary thanks for the reply and the support.

Yes my energy is lower, even though I have been running around more, if that makes sense?

Well done you, day 16 is ace.

See you on day 6 / 17 if not before! :)

Breakfast sounds wonderful , I can taste the garlic, and that's a good thing! (!!)

As for the coffe, it's possible that it's replacing the stimulant effect of the fags?

Anyway, you can quit fags, caffeine won't be such an issue (although I was a caffeine addict too at about a gram a day and the headaches were horrendous (that's about 15 cups a day).

Hi :) you're getting there see! I think nicotine should be seen as a drug too. Then maybe young people wouldn't start. I know I wouldn't have if it was seen as what I know it is now. It aint the 'habit' of it I don't think. I broke that pretty quickly so I know that wasn't the issue. Its the addictive drug nicotine that keeps us hooked.

My sleep was all over the place in the first week also. Really bad I'd be lying there for a few hours before I'd drift off and even then I'd be on a buzz all day not tired at all lol must be cos you arnt taking in all the toxins anymore? I feel much more normal now, sleep patterns back and energy normal lol

I've cut down on caffeine, don't drink coca cola anymore and no caffeine after about 6 o'clock! Bought decaf tetley teabags, they taste the same. Hot drinks helped me too as they are comforting, I've always loved them. Loving options winter spice hot choc at the min lol been and bought more sachets at asda after work tonight!

Hi,

Conrats on the recent quit. I to would love to cut down my caffiene intake, but working 12hr nightshifts its the only thing that keeps me going. Personally I am at the end of Day 1, if it helps I have created a group for Feb quitters, hopefully it could be a great tool, please join and invite those you know who have quit this month

Keep strong and we are here for you

Don

My mam, a non smoker, works 12 hour nightshifts in a carehome and she says the same as you, she needs the caffiene :) lol

Try to cut it out after a certain time to help you sleep after nightshift though, if you're finding it hard to sleep that is. It helps!

Awww you will be fine. Get some decaf teabags/coffee :) if I'm struggling to sleep, I use natrasleep herbal tablets from savers, and a hot choc lol sends me away. But to be honest I've slept soundly every night since thursday so I havnt taken any since then.

Another sleep tip is a hot relaxing bath, wind down with some good tv and don't go to bed hungry. Also avon do some sleep easy balm that you rub onto temples or wrists, and a pillow spray these are good

Getting there Rochelle, I've not come this far to fall :) I know you were referring to Don though, Hi, Don! :)

Nicotine should definitely be classified... AA at least as I have said, the most addictive substance in the World, drop for drop 3 times more poisonous than strychnine and arsenic, the latter being contained in ready-made cigarettes to add to the addictive properties.

I think you are right about it being the addiction after all, not the habit we thought it was in the first place, and it's an important point.

I think the lack of sleep is due to the over-active receptors crying out for their fix, that's just my view though.

Spot on with the hot chocolate too :D mine is chocolate brownie, loving the cherry choc too.

Herbal teas here though now, a side-effect of having a yoga practising other half (!).
