So pleased to have found this site and hope to gain some insights and support as I begin my own journey.Decided that this is my year to ditch the evil weed once and for all. Have had several half hearted attempts at quitting before, the longest lasting 10 days with NRT (patches). Have been smoking nearly 20 years and feel psychologically prepared to say this is it, turning 40 next year lol. Have joined a smoking cessation group which runs for 6 weeks, and I think I'll get some great support there and here in the weeks to come. Have opted to take the champix route this time round and would be interested to share with others their experiences.

So determined to succeed and get the nicotine monster off my back and gain some control fed up being controlled and yes I'm one of those smokers who light up within 5 minutes of waking up-hands up. This isn't going to be easy.

Hi and welcome, I also was a reach for the fags on waking up with a coffee, im on day 5 and have gone cold turkey, no matter which you take good luck and just stick at it, i followed some on this forum for the first 4 days and obviously with willpower im stating to feel the not so easy days before where all worth the minute by minute battle, i'd say theres a 50/50 chance i would have lit up without this forum and now all starting to get better although ive still got a long way to go, good luck and it's critical to just take one day at a time in the new stages.

Hi and welcome there are afew on here that are or have used champix with there quit there are afew threads around about it as like with anything it doesnt help everyone but like with everything you have to try it to see for yourself

The people on this forum are here to support you as much as you need which is always a boost knowing there is someone that understands what your going through

Onwards and upwards is the way to go

Thanks so much for kind words of support. Gearing myself up now psychologically for quit with champix Lots of reading and research going on. Still smoking and will do so according to champix treatment plan-Set a quit day for 23rd January along with the other members of my weekly support group. Already thinking of diversion strategies- difficult part is i'm not working at the minute as i'm on maternity leave until March which leaves me with more free time on my hands- Plan plenty of walks with the pram-weather allowing and organising and cleaning my house-spring clean here we come. Family very supportive especially my Dad who gave up after a major heart attack 14 years ago -never smoked since. wish me luck and I'll keep you all posted as I continue my journey.

Good luck with your quit. You sound like you have a good quitting plan and good support from your family. Use the forum. Especially when you are craving. There is always someone here who can help you when it gets tough.

All the best with your quit. It seems you do have a great plan and reading/researching about nicotine and smoking cessation I think is the key to a successful quit. Out of interest, you say you are on maternity leave, did you manage to quit smoking through your pregnancy? Just wondering really as a friend of mine and my sister did but went straight back to it after the baby was born.

Honest reply to your question the answer is I'm ashamed to say is no not completely, but I managed to cut down drastically to a few guilty self loathing puffs a day in complete secrecy from my family and friends who would have been utterly horrified if they knew. My partner knew , but was understanding as he has an awful habit himself. I'm hoping that if I succeed in this he will follow suit, but thats another story. He is talking about it but not sure whether he is truly at the pre contemplation stage yet.

In my area they do carbon monoxide testing in the early stages of pregnancy (at about 8 weeks) and as I was smoking very little my reading was at 1 and I was open with the health professionals managing to convince them and myself for that matter that I would give up completely for the duration of my pregnancy which I ashamedly never did. This was my second pregnancy and I did the same thing with my first pregnancy with my little boy now aged 8 ( I had a little girl in February). I feel disgusted with myself every time I think about it , but I knew the risks and thank God the outcome was fortunate. I had easy births with both children who were both born healthy and beautiful.

I do ask myself If I couldn't manage to stop when pregnant when there is no better reason , can I do it now?, but I'm determined to succeed foremost for them, to see them grow up without a smoking mother and God willing father in the years to come.

I read somewhere that you need to quit for yourself and not for someone else and as harsh as it sounds - your unborn baby was someone else.

I don't doubt your determination, you sound focussed and ready for the new beginning on Jan 23. We will be here every step of the way too!

Collected prescription

Hi all,

Just collected my boy from school and collected the initial two week course from the chemist. Quit date 23rd January-11 days of taking the tablets and still smoking up until then as per guidance and this is also the date set by my peer support group. Enthusiastic about quit, but from previous attempts I know this is par of the course and the hard work lies ahead. Plan to take my first tablet this evening after dinner as I noted that someone on the forum said that the nausea can be lessened if tablet is taken with food. So looking forward to being smoke free I hope I can do this , trying to keep positive and keep resolve up.

So happy to be participating in this forum and learning from others all the time . I know I'll use the forum to record my feelings as I continue along the road. Wish me luck and I'll keep you posted on my experiences.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the social group. I had a quick look and joined up as there seems to be plenty of great advice and support spinning around. I took my first tablet this evening - felt strangely calm. Hope it's not calm before the storm and I suffer too many side effects..epic dreams sound quite good thou.
