Tired of playing this game

I last smoked on 11/09/2011 at 10pm.

It feels as though I have been playing a game for 13 days and I now want to stop playing and go back to my "normal" life!!!!! I stumbled accross this forum a few days ago and have been using it as a prop when I felt alone in my struggle (part of the game I have been playing).

I'm now tired of my game and would love a cig.

grumpie

good to see you here.:D I know the feeling , been there. You just want it to stop ! I think the nicotine monster is playing with your mind, don't give in . Have you tried sipping water , maybe try to read Allan Carr's book ? ( I can't believe that I start telling everyone about the book now, it used to annoy me like hell). It did help me when I went out this morning and saw everyone having a smoke.

You doing so well and archieved so much. Rant, post, ask , read ...it can take only a few minutes, or some hrs and you feel amazing when you got over this horrible feeling.

hi grumpie. like dorset says we've all been there, so welcome, you're in the right place!

non smoking is like a game, or a wagon, and the only rule is you can't get off! so in a sense you only have this one problem to solve, to decide you will keep on playing the game. maybe imagine the game is very exciting, i mean its a game of life or death, thats pretty damn exciting.

and of course playing the game means you are in control of your life, not some parasitic weed, that's pretty exciting too. dang i like this game! hope you get to like it too..

it used to annoy me like hell.

lol, same here, i guess a lot of us were anoyed by him till we read it! no turning back once you do, the man was a genius!

Hi Grumpie,

I've been where you are now! I hated the feeling of not being the normal me, and for ages smoking was practically all I could think about and it drove me nuts.

You've smoked when you're happy, sad, scared, worried, bored, as a reward for a job well done, to stay awake, to pass the time... you've built up so many associations, it's not really surprising that your subconscious takes a while to readjust!

But you kind of have to accept it and power through, because you are carving out a new normality for yourself, and that isn't going to happen overnight, or even in a couple of weeks. Another quitter on this site calls it 'ongoing mental realignment'. Once you get your head round that it does get easier. And easier and easier.

And you start to feel real benefits too, which does help with the motivation.

It's a game, in a way, but it's a bloody serious one. And the stakes are way too high to throw in the towel now. Keep going, and you will be a winner.

All the best,

Helen x

Day is improving

Thank you all for your thoughts and encouragement.

This day is improving as it progresses. I'm using those "minis" and it seems I possibly only had 1 or 2 this morning (I forgot about them). That may be a good sign that the cravings are easing but I now think that I may have been a little starved of nic. midday/ early afternoon and was getting morbid.

Grateful for all the support.

So glad you got through it. There will come a time when not smoking will be normal and you will feel normal, I remember feeling like this don't forget your brain has got used to you doing this smoking thing and thinks it's normal, well you retrain it to not smoking being normal {I'm going on a bit now:confused:}

You will feel better I promise but it does take time.:)

One major reason I have for keeping on with my quit is the sure knowledge of never wanting to go through those early times again ... ever! ;)

You've cracked the hardest bit already, though it may not yet feel it :)

Hopefully you've come across some informative info in posts along with reading links in some members signatures. Find your tools to help maintain your quit, esp in these early stages.

Know your enemy, educate yourself as to whats happening with regards how quitting effects both mind and body .

Shite days may come but they go. They also become less in frequency and intensity. There really comes a time when you realise you've not thought about smokes for a day or 3

All the best :)

Good point raised by Pol, nail it here and you'll never have to go through those feelings again!

We all know that feeling

Listen Grumpy,

Everybody who has found this site knows what you are going through, but don't give in to the nico monster. When you feel like a fag get out and go for a walk or open your coputer and talk to all the people on this forum, who all helped me when I decided to try and stop after 35 years. You can do this and like me you will feel the benifts of ditching the fags. Talk to us often as we all know what you are going through.
