Back on the fitness path

I joined a new gym today. So plan to have a swim when youngest son has his swimming lesson this afternoon. I am really looking forward to getting back into yoga and pilates.

My weight has gone up slightly but I have kept the chocolate to a minimum. Determined there will be no repeat of the cream egg mania that took hold of me last year.

My hacking cough and the morning phlegm has gone which is brilliant. The craves are getting easier. I haven't been out socially yet so I have that trigger to come.

Well done you for getting on the fitness path so quickly, it's taken me ages!! It will be brilliant for adding that feel good factor, you'll be able to look at yourself and see not just a nice smelling, non coughing mum, but a lean, fit, nice smelling, non coughing mum.

Don't worry about being out socially, you'll do it when you're ready. I personally find the winter one of the bonuses of not smoking, who wants to be standing outside in the cold/rain or snow when they can be relaxing inside in the warm?

Congratulation on week 2, you'll be counting in months before you know it. You sound really positive which is the key to this whole business, well done you.

Thanks, Lorraine. Going to the gym and the Couch to 5k really helped me on my quit last year. I loved the feeling so energetic. I was really angry that I threw it all away. This year I know to avoid becoming complacent and to never take another puff.

Exercise

Why is exercise better? Is it just because it releases endorphins that make you feel a bit happy or should i actually feel any healthier?

I have been boxing (while smoking and now that im not) and walking, tried a run last night and only managed about 4 minutes and my troath was burning and i couldnt breath. I could manage far longer when i smoked, why is this a few weeks back?

Its frustrating to feel far more unfit now and im on day 10

Tinaa - I've been looking into this. From what I can gather, after you've quit and your lungs start to clear out all the accumulated crap, sometimes mucus gets trapped in the lungs, and this ends up blocking up small airways which accounts for the shortness of breath. I imagine this could be worse during exercise.

The problem should only be temporary. But you should check with your GP. They might be able to prescribe you an inhaler or a decongestent which will help.

I didn't start my running for a few days because I knew there would be some gunge to cough up. The first coyuple of runs I was very breathless but each time it gets easier. I went for a swim this afternoon and it was harder for me than a run for some reason.

Thanks, Snow. I work part-time and am the only female in a house of 5 males so escaping to the gym is easier and also essential for my mental health, lol!

I should go to a gym. Problem is, I hate gyms. And running. And swimming - I'm a crap swimmer and i get overtaken by little old ladies.

So I guess it's walking for me then...

I hate the machines at the gym. But I love the yoga and Pilates classes. Tomorrow I going to try Zumba. My 70 year old Mum keeps telling me it's great.

Lol, no I don't work as a support worker but I used to be an ICU nurse many years ago. Now I work in an office.

So you have huge food bills, lot's of testosterone and too much sport, too!

Five boys in my house too. Although two of them are cats. And they've been neutered. So... not quite the same then. :D

Ah yes, the ironing mountain. I have an understairs cupboard that serves to hide it. Mind you, now I am not stopping for fag breaks all the time, I seem to get more done.

Hels, at the moment I am tempted to swap my 16 year old for a cat!

Stop talking about ironing. There's a pile the size of Ireland in the corner of my living room. I swear, it's occasionallly growling at me. And I'm just sitting here noodling on the laptop, I can't FACE it!
