Young smoker trying to quit.

Hoping this is the place to be, if not I won't post no more. If this forum is strictly for quitting cigarettes I am sorry for joining. I was reccomended to this forum by yahoo answers trying to quit smoking marijuana. I started when I was 15, July 2nd 2008 and I was never able to quit for more than 1 week. I am now 18 and trying to stop before I hit the 3 year point. I was told it was all in your head and it wasnt' addictive by many people but I am unsure on how to get this message out of my head. One of the main reasons why I decided to quit this time is because I haven't feeling the top of the world lately, I have been having stomach problems, lack of eating, and burping quite often. I stopped for one day which is a accomplishment for me since I am a regulary daily smoker for the past 8 months. Yesterday was the first day off in a very long time. Hoping for tips and support, maybe even some ways on to talking to other young quitters for support. Thanks, but once again if I am in the wrong forum I am sorry.

Hi Eric sorry to see you are not feeling on top of the world but I hope that having decided to quit the dreaded weed you will Im sure start to feel better very soon.

I can only say that my son also gave up smoking weed 2 years ago at the age of 30 and he is still free of it, cant say that he found it easy and he did quit the cigs at the same time as he said he couldnt do one without the other.

This forum is predominately about quitting smoking but I hope that being able to chat to others while you are going through this will help and you may find there are others on here that have given up the weed and have more info to give you.

Thanks for the forums. I will sign up and get more advice from more people. Maybe its about time I see a doctor, I haven't seen once since Grade 7, maybe through the past 3 years somethings been up. Whats the best thing to do in this situation? Just a ordinary checkup?

I would agree, seeing GP is a good idea but I would book double appointment, if you explain when you ring to the receptionist what you are trying to achieve and that you will need more time they will book you a special, there are also free phone numbers you can call ie call frank I am told they are incredibly help full.

Talk Talk and more talk, have you told family so that you have there support as well.

No one knows that I have been a daily smoker except my friends. If my family knew that I even started this mess I don't know what would happen. What is a GP another word for a doctor?

Yes, the guy you visit for appointments outside of hospital (vaccinations, check-ups ), family doctor etc. In the UK GP - general practitioner.

I agree that you should make a Dr.s appointment. My cousin did weed from 12 and did it every day until he was 18 or so. The only reason he stopped was because he was jailed, but the people who say it does no damage are full of BS as he has numerous problems related to it, not least a form of paranoid schizophrenia.

It is really worth seeing a dr, just like a significant number of us did when giving up smoking, if nothing else they are someone you can visit regularly for a pat on the back.

In the meantime, feel free to post here and we will (I am sure) offer as much support as we are able, and certainly having a group of people around going through the quit has helped me no end.

If I go to the doctor what should I make the appointment for? Just a regular checkup? I was told yesterday I looked a lot more skinnier than usual, I just weighed myself and I was 15 pounds less than I was 1 and a half weeks ago. Do you lose weight trying to quit?

Yes are you not in the uk and if not does that mean you have to pay for medical treatment, maybe there are walk in centres near where you live that you can go too.

And yes my son lost weight because unlike cigs weed makes you eat and quitting smoking makes you eat, so that is maybe why you have lost weight.

Get eating regular and fruit and carbs are a good choice.

Thanks for all the posts, im going to try and see a doctor tomorrow or clinic since I hear family doctors you cant just walk in and ask for a checkup. I was wondering if anyone ever feels (frequent smokers I would guess more) that sometimes they will be walking and feel like they skip a heartbeat or a shortage of breath for a good 2-3 seconds. Thinking its caused by smoking if anyone has any similar experiences or the cause of this.

Hi,

I have never felt that, shortness of breath I think is fairly normal in smokers, but probably not in short spells, what you describe sound more acute than the chronic shortness of breath of smokers.

DO go to the doctors, it could be related to smoking, but equally could be another condition altogether. I think as either smokers or ex-smokers we have a habit of putting everything that feels slightly wrong down to smoking, when there may be more to it. Always better safe than sorry.

If you usually smoke weed in a joint with tobacco it will indeed be the tobacco that you will struggle to come off most.

To the best of my knowledge, although a mild psychological dependency can occur with weed it is not physically addictive in any way - tobacco is.

Again - if you regularly smoke normal cigarettes as well you will be in nicotine withdrawal, which you will notice more than anything else.

Use all the forums you want to and can. People who quit weed tend to find their cigarette smoking escalates for a while, if you are quitting both you will need support. Get your Doc on board and anything else to help you.

Good luck :)
