First time drinking since stopped smoking.

Looks like I'll be going out soon, some friends are getting together for a few beers. I haven't drank for 3 weeks to help quit smoking. I've now been smoke free for 2 weeks.

I'm really craving a beer, just wondering what other peoples experiences are with drinking alcohol for the first time after not smoking. Any tips or anything I should be aware of?

Thanks

Sam

Hi Sam

Like you i dreaded it too , just dont try to avoid it is something you are going to face if one of the company you are in is a smoker, just keep on telling yourself dont want one dont need one, and if you start to walk back into the pub as they are halfway through their smoke, they will join you as they dont want to be on their own :D it is a lot easier than you think Sam you made the right choice by stopping why on earth would you want to go back now after coming this far.

Hello,

I am now on three and a half weeks, and have found it hard to not smoke whilst drinking, but as said try not to avoid the situation. I work in a pub and as bad as it sounds the only breaks we tend to get are if your a smoker and you take a fag break, so i have been taking my 'fag' break but just simply sitting outside talking to the 'smokers' for five minutes. I have not found this that hard to be honest, because i can just tell myself that i am saving a lot of money and also saving my health.

I will be having a big night out on friday night, as it is a friends hen do, and this is going to be a challenge, but i think alot of it will be down to positive thinking and will power, maybe take a lolly pop in your handbag/pocket incase you feel the need to 'use your mouth' (sorry...nothing rude!) as i have found this useful in the past few weeks.

Good Luck

Becci x

Drinking didn't make me crave at all. Eat crisps and drink more yes!

OH yeah, this was my major crave thing as i used to smoke lots while drinking! I have finally beaten it. It's just breaking the association again but i found it did trigger CRAAAVINGS....resist them and don't drink so much that you think "bugger it..."

Drink so fast that you get so drunk you couldnt stand up to smoke a cig if you wanted one, sorry I know that is not a sensible thing to suggest so smack my legs LOL

Errr I dont drink very often only on here so I dont have a problem as no one on here smokes LOL

Hello,

I was terrified and waited 4 weeks to have more than one drink. This was my biggest trigger so I did find it quite hard however not as hard as I had made it seem in my head.

I would suggest not getting totally trollied to the point you think "feck it, one won't hurt" and if at all possible don't sit near the door/smoking area so you aren't thinking about it all the time.

Oh and try and enjoy yourself :)

update: I ended up getting pretty drunk, but didn't smoke a cigarette. i didn't seem to forget the reasons why i stopped smoking, and yeah was pretty stoked when I woke up not stinking of smoke.

It's also funny when other people are smoking and you notice how much they smell!

Day 16 now and my cravings for cigarettes seem to be pretty erratic. I want one but I don't want one if you know what I mean. Bit of a nostalgia hit today or something...

Don't find it a problem at the time of drinking, but if I feel a bit rough the next day, that's when all my will power can go out of the window, sitting about feeling sorry for myself.

Enjoy your night out and don't worry, there should be enough going on around you and people to watch to take you mind off smoking.
