Hi everyone,

This is my first post on here,so glad i found this forum as i think my family are getting a bit fed up with dealing with my moods, god this is so hard,i stopped smoking 2 weeks ago today.I finally got the kick up the backside after being rushed into hospital with plurisy and pnumonia.I was discharged yesterday with the warning that if i smoked again i may not make it.Whilst i was in hospital even though i was very ill i still craved for a ciggie but was determined not to.The staff even told me that if i wanted to have a ciggie that they would not stop me it was my choice.Hubby bought me in an inhalator which has been briliant, but hubby is a heavy smoker and has agreed to smoke outside now at all times, bless him.

If i can stop smoking then anyone can,i smoked 24/7,my life revolved around where and when i could smoke,i wouldn't go on holiday if the flight was longer than 3hrs.Ciggies ruled my life, but not any more.

Thankyou for reading this, good luck to everyone

debbie

you CAN do this!

Hey Debbie!!!!

Its good that you have posted, everyone on here is very supportive and some have or are still going through the trials of illness and having to stop for health related reasons.... You are doing the right thing here, you need to keep telling yourself that!

Its good to come on here and rant, read, and to realise that whatever happens YOU ARE NOT ALONE ON YOUR QUIT! seriously, i wouldn;t be where i am now if it hadn't been for the help, support and advice of everyone, i'm now at 5 months (first time ever).

People have to be leniant with you, you will have mood swings, but soon enough they will pass. I promise!!! Have a look at whyquit.com for some sound stories when cravings hit... it helped me... Keep Posting... Good Luck and most importantly.... YOU CAN DO THIS.

Hi Debbie sometimes it takes a wakeup call to make us come to our senses and this is yours, but it was a good wakeup call that you got, Pleurisy and Pneumonia is bad but the big C would have been worse so here’s your chance to turn your life around and I promise you want regret it and maybe if hubby sees you can do it maybe he will join you.

This forum is superb and if you have time on your hands then spend it on here and make sure you tell everyone about you illness so they can realise how bad it can get, it may help someone who hasn’t had any illnesses due to cig realise that have given up in time not to have to suffer from one.

Read all you can about quitting and even read some of the horror stories just stay strong and well done.

PS excuse my rambles just like to see people succeed LOL

Thankyou for your support.I am determined that i will never smoke again,i was on a ward with ladies younger than i who were on oxygon to keep them alive, and were still asking to be taken outside for a cigarette, scary.I never want to be in that position.

The district nurse is coming out to see me tomorrow to test my lung function and to check that the infection is clearing.I certainly feel much better,in fact i am now able to do things without gasping for air that i haven't been able to do for years. And boy the taste of certain things is so strong,i had forgot how strong mint sauce could taste.

On the sort of down side,i have demolished over the last 2 days, 11 cadbury cream eggs:o Is there a forum to get me off this addiction?

I have worked out that in 6 months time i will have saved over £2500,this is my dream holiday to America and to think i have been watching it go up in smoke twice a year.

No there is no forum to get you off the choccy in fact that gets worse before it gets better LOL I imagine as a fairly long term smoker you are not huge so dont worry too much about abit of weight gain you probably need to put a bit on after being so poorly I went mad on choccy and crisps to get through my first month , then had to go docs for a blood test and found cholesterol had decided to go sky high so now on really strict diet to get it down so now no more choccy for me and thats harder than the cigs LOL

I hope your nurse tells you thet the quit is helping your lungs improve daily and soon you will begin to feel the difference and believe me you will better to be a plump no smoker than a skinny smoker xx

Godo Luck!!!!

Hi Debbie!!!

Good Luck with tomorrow!!!

Try to intersperse your newly found creme egg addiction with healthier fruit and veg based stuff too... a little of what you fancy and all of that!!!!:D

Bear in mind that it will get easier and before you know it the cravings will have subsided to a more manageable level..... sounds mad for you now, but i promise it does!!!

Keep Focussed on that dream America trip, how about printing off some pictures and sticking them around your house to motivate you... something to work towards is always a help!

Good Luck... let us know how you get on with the Nurse if you want to.

wow thats a lot of cream eggs. but just think how many you can buy with £2500! loadsa eggs! haha. all the eggs. you can go to cadbury world for a month and just tour the factory and eat eggs. and you wont even need a cigarette break.

nah seriously, great decision to stop. you have found the best place in the world to do it. good luck, and post often, especially to begin with, it really helps to keep you focused on your quitting effort. congrats again debbie and welcome aboard :D

I live 10mins away from cadbury world and as my BIL works for them he gets a free pass into the shop and can buy as much choc as he wants at stupid prices, life is soooooo not fair:(

Back to the ciggies, those 2 weeks in hospital were terrifying.I was told on several occasions by several doctors that if i hadn't have come in when i did the chances were that i would not have been coming out.I was like most peeps, never thought it could happen to me.Wakey Wakey it can,i am proof it does.I never, ever want to go through that again,I am not out of the woods yet but at least i will see my youngest daughter get married in May,i will see my grandaughter in her ballet and tap dancing show, and i will get my holiday in America,no little white stick of poison is going to stop me.

Your kind words of support is very much appreciated, thanks everyone

Sorry i haven't been back on for a few days.I had a bit of a set back following the nurses visit the other day to check on my recovery. She asked if i had considered possible surgery in the future following my chest infection.Surgery?????? wasn't sure what she meant by this and on asking what she meant she said that a lung transplant may be a possible option. To say i was gob smacked is an understatment.I just sat there stunned while she prattled on.Eventually she must have realised that i was in a state of shock as she asked me if i was ok.Anyway to cut a long story short it seems that she was of the opinion that i had severe lung damage and that i had been in hospital on many occasions on oxygon.None of this is right,i have never been in hospital before with chest infections and i do not have lung damage. What i do have is a hereditory disease called alpha 1 deficiancy. The disease can cause lung problems, emphasemia being one of them, all the more reason not to smoke or to give up like myself. My mom has this disease, she has alpha 1 as well she also smoked but stopped 25yrs ago.She is 82 and still going strong.

After telling the nurse all this she apologised over and over again, and she also phoned yesterday to check that i wasn't still upset and frightened and she is also coming out tomorrow to make sure i am ok.

Well actually i'm not ok,you know what it's like ,these things start to play on your mind,is she covering up something,i don't know, haven't been able to sleep since then and to be honest if there was a ciggie in front of me i think i would have smoked it.

Sorry this is such a long post and thanks for reading it,i just needed to get this off my chest.

big hugs to all

Debbie welcome to the family

Well done you, and like me it took a health scare to make us quit see my comments at the 3 month page. I am now nearly 4 months off the habit and I beleive that the many people and comments on this site have helped in this process. As you progress through the days, weeks and months , without cigarettes talk to your new family and ask questions about your feelings, shout at us, question us, because we are the people who know exactly what you are going through, and beleive us when we tell you that every day you stay off the ciggies , things get easier and easier.

Welcome to the family and talk to you soon.

Dannyboy.

Live Fife Scotland

Stopped 18th Dec 2009 CT

Age 55

Smoked for 35 years

Me going upstairs was the only heavy breathing that was in this house until I stopped smoking, but not now.

Thanks Dannyboy.I went and read your post and it was good to see that i wasn't the only one who needed that fright to motivate them into quiting. This was my first atempt to stop the evil weed after smoking fo over 30 years.Even smoked through pregnancy and following the birth of my grandchildren. My granddaughter came to see me while i was in hospital and she was so pleased that nanny hadn't had a ciggie. She made me promise that i wouldn't have another one so how could i let her down?

Without everyones support on here i would be struggling but when i come on and read about others experiences it really helps, thankyou.
