Feeling a failure

Hi Everyone

Reading all your posts has been really encouraging and has given me the nudge I needed to try and quit again. I have smoked 20 – 30 a day for the past 30 years and have tried numerous times to give up. I have tried acupuncture, hypnotherapy and the majority of the NRT treatments available and more recently Champix. I know several friends who have given up using this and was delighted when my GP was willing to hand over the prescription.

Since taking it, I have had only minor side effects and although I have cut down, I am on day 14 and still have not stopped and I feel really disappointed. Today should have been my quit day but by 11am the craving were unbearable. I will try again tomorrow, but I wondered if anyone else had similar experiences or had some advice.

Thanks in advance

Steph

Hi Steph

Sorry I can't help you as I have never tried quitting using champix.....but there are a lot in here that have and I am sure as the day goes on that you will get some good feedback on here from "the gang".

I used the patches myself and FOR ME they did the trick.

Good luck and best wishes to you :).

Regards Trev

In a word yes: (edited to say I meant yes people have had similar experiences not that you are a failure)

This is not a race and Champix is a fantastic stopping aid BUT BUT BUT you do need a will of steel too. Frankly it took me months to get over cravings and it is not easy but it does get better.

Sue's blog which I've bumped up is really good, also do a search for the other champix blogs.

You will be OK, if I was you I would now give yourself a couple more days then set a day (say Saturday) and build yourself up to that day and quit. Make sure you fill your day with things to do, ie long walk in the morning, clean out your sock draw, re-roof the house:D You know what I mean. I went for a pamper.

We are here if you need us.

Good luck

xx

Thanks for getting back to me and for your support and advice. Just back from the nurse who has reassured me that everyone reacts differently to Champix and it doesn't mean it is not working.

So onwards and upwards and I WILL keep trying and again thanks to all of you who have managed it so far. You are an inspiration to those of us who are still climbing the walls.

Cheers

Steph:)

Thank you all so much for your support and you guys are brill!

Getting advice from people who have been there and have quit certainly helps the cause.

Feeling better already and i'll see what tomorrow brings.

Thanks again and have a good evening

Steph, you will only be a failure if you go the rest of your life and never stop smoking. If you are determind you will get there, this was my first quit and most people don't get there first time. But I'm living proof if you are determined it can be done just one hour at a time will lead to one day at a time and on from there.

It has not been easy for me and it won't be easy for you. You have to stick at it.

I'd second that comment from Jack...

...and the fact that you are on here, thinking about quitting and trying different methods proves that you are NOT a failure!

It takes people different amounts of time, it's a massive change to make. Just keep on trying to make it, and I'm sure you will.

Keep on keeping on, and don't doom yourself to failure before you've even started - positivity is a big part of the process! :)

Good luck.

Steph, now you've decided to quit, you will. It might be tough at times, but I believe that once a smoker decides he/she doesn't want to smoke anymore, they will eventually stop. You've made the difficult decision, now you just have to work your way through it. Read links and advice, do things you enjoy and don't spend time moping and worrying. You will get there, baby steps are needed, but you'll do it.

Morning Everyone

And thank you for your replies - you are all so right in what you have said and although deep down I know what I must do it is sometimes good to hear it from other people - so thank you.

Not shouting too loudly at the moment as it is only lunchtime but I haven't had a cigarette since last night. Fingers crossed and I'll let you know how I get on.

I hope you all have a good day.
