First Timer Here...

I am 19 years old and am currently in my first year at university. I had never smoked before in my life but three months ago, someone offered one to me when I was very stressed out over an oncoming deadline.

It started as just one but rapidly became a couple of packs a week - as it does. And now I'm finding myself with less and less money a week and as a student, I really can't afford to be low on funds.

At three packs a week, it was costing me £18 a week, and thats far too much for me to spend right now. So I guess I'm quitting for financial reasons as well as my health.

Today I bought some Niquitin gum, and have chewed two pieces so far today. It tastes pretty horrible to be honest but it has stopped me from smoking all day which means it must be working.

Fingers crossed to get through day two.

Hi, well done for making the decision, you won't regret it. You will get lot's of help and advice from people on here, they are very supportive, everyone has different experiences with stopping smoking, read as many posts and links as you can to understand what will change both physically and mentally.

Try to get yourself a little treat as a well done with the money you save, a favourite bar of chocolate perhaps. Stay positive, do things that make you smile and don't forget to thank that friend from 3 months ago, (we all have one don't we!). You may feel that 3 months ago you made one of the worse decisions ever to have a cigarette, but on the plus side, it was just 3 months and you are doing something about it now. Better that than in 3 or 30 years.

Wishing you all the best, you are doing the right thing, never question that.

Lorraine :)

How you getting on today Vengeance?

Your right to reign in the habit/addiction before it gets even worse because that 3 packs a week suddenly becomes 7 packs a week.. and for some .. worse.. and you don't want that. Not if money is a concern.

good luck, hope you crack this so soon into a smoking habit.

Well done stopping smoking, now is really the best time for you as you have only been doing it for 3 months, just shows how addictive it is. Really try and get off them, most of us have had to pay up for them with money and health for years and years, you are doing the right thing, stick with it.

Best wishes.

Jackie

Good luck with staying quit :)

Half term? I didn't think Uni's has half term breaks but it's a shame that if you did go home, you'd be tempted to smoke/smoke more.

Cost is a massive issue to a lot of folk but a student?

Even if I still smoked I'd resent subbing my son if he was spending some of it on smokes. I'm such a mean parent :)

If you really struggle with the gum and it's obnoxious taste, you could try the lozenges........... I never got on with the gum when I tried it years ago but the lozenge's, for me, weren't so bad but then I only had one and that was to keep my quit nurse happy with feed back. The gums probably cheaper anyway :)

Great going on your Day 2, all the best to you with staying quit
