Stress!!

Hi guys

I hope you're all well-Tink in particular, I hope you've cheered up?:)

I've had 2 days of horrible, horrible stress-me and my OH had a massive bust up the other night (made worse by the fact we've both given up) and although we've made up now, we're in the process of moving and his accountant has managed to lose our books with 8 days before the tax self assessment deadline!

Obviously, the first thing I wanted to turn to was a ciggy! I stopped myself though and just kept thinking of something I'd read (don't know if it was on here or somewhere else): having a fag is not going to make the actual situation any better. It's not going to change anything or make the problem go away, and I'll actually feel 10 times worse after having one so therefore actually ADD to the problems. It's been tough but I feel better having faced stress and not given in. Anyways, I just thought I;d share that with you all. I hope it helps someone else in times of stress!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx :D

You're right Emily having a fag is not going to make anything better. I was trying to explain last night to friend (who's never smoked) what it was all about, this quitting lark, and I said that I'd trained my body to crave a substance 20 times a day and as soon as I lit a fag within 10 seconds I had *relief* nothing else I ever do in life is going to give me relief that quickly but it was a self developed cycle created by addiction.

You're looking for that feeling of relief, the feeling that everything is ok, that the craving is satisfied, your problems (which I hope get sorted soon) will still be there after a fag you've just conditioned yourself over years to feel relief once you've had a fag. It's a lie, don't believe, you don't need and it won't solve anything.

Speaking as someone whos two main downfalls are stress -and booze- or both. Stress makes you crave one- when you were a smoker you craved one at times of stress, as any addict sees the substance as a cure to whatever thing hee's experiencing,There is no stress relieving power to them at all, i know as i've done it many times, they will just make you crave the next one.

Emily - how good you are not giving into the 'excuse' that a fag is what you need to help! Well done honey :D Hope your stress goes away - it's a brave step to decide to give up when you're moving (which is supposed to be one of them most stressful things you can do) - you obviously both want to and you're doing fabulously well...

Keep strong - hope the problems are sorted out soon - but keep your positive attitude and you'll be fine.

The road to smoke free is full off pot holes

Hi Emily

Sorry you had to face the stress before you were ready but everyone smokers and non smokers get stress/anxiety its part of life and if you think back to Before Ciggs you will remember times of stress/Anxiety and when you could grab a ciggy but be HONEST did the stress/anxiety dissapear NO I bet it didnt you just had something else to focus on so seemed to mask it, so when you think of having another cigs ask why do you need one didnt cure anything when you were smoking so it want cure anything now but it will give you back the tack on your lungs and hieghten the other risks AND we all know what they are

So I will appologise for the ramble but I have just reached 33 days and last week was the worst since stopping so would hate to go back and have to do that again and would hate for anyone else to have to go there LOL

Keep up the stop xx

Hi Emily,

You are sure motivated to quit especially if you have alot of stress at the moment and are still smoke free, good on you hun!!!:D

I totally agree, when I was stressed out I would always turn to the ciggies as I thought I would feel better for it, well did I really?, NO the ciggie would not take away what had caused the stress. I always used to smoke more aswel.

I hope your stress goes soon. I think you are doing fantastic.

Good luck with everything.

I am on day 27 so a few behind you at the time of your writing .... today has been AWFUL!!! So true that it seems to be worse in some aspects ... the only thing that keeps you going at times is bloody-mindedness that I AM NOT GOING THROUGH THIS HELL FOR NOTHING!!! I hope my mindset sorts itself out soon!

Hello!

"bloody-mindedness" -- thats excatly how I got through the early days!! :) I think when you quit you need this in abundance!!

well done to those on this thread though -- emily, shazieb, jodib to name a few. Your all doing fantastically well. :)

keep strong and we'll all get over that finishing line.

Day 34 here cold turkey. Never thought I'd say that on the morning of the 12th January 2010 when I looked in my pocket and realised I had no money, add to the fact that I was "days" away from pay day and after an especially expensive Xmas and New years (and being paid 2 weeks earlier the month before!! yikes) - I made the rash decision that I couldnt buy anymore cigs so i would have to give up there and then. A few troubles along the way. But here I am. 34 days later. Smoke free. And current estimation £128.72 extra 'in my pocket' and a few extra pounds elsewhere ;)

Well done everyone!!!

Cheers,

Paul
