Quits - How many?

I've been a bit of a geek today with the whole quit smoking thing, and I read that people who succeed are more likely to have had at least 3 attempts before they actually quit.

Slightly worrying as this is my first attempt, so I was wondering how many times have you tried and what was the longest?

Hope you are all good, nearly the week-end you lovely people.

Hello my love

Seriously I'm not worried as such (comment made in jest), I was just interested. So Bradders, how many?

Well, this is my first real quit attempt and I'm not worrying, but I am curious non the less. Previously when I've stopped I have only stopped temporarily on purpose knowing I'd start again so they don't count.

There are those of us who already plan to prove the law of averages wrong in the number of 'typical drops'..... whose to say we are not worried about now also proving the statistic about 3 quits being better odds in succeeding

Geek away Christine .......... it's to your benefit :p

Cheers my dear.

The only times I remember that I stopped smoking was on long haul flights!! It's laughable really but I remember having flu and dragging myself from my bed downstairs to the garden for a ciggie even though my lungs were dying.

I spoke to a woman a couple of weeks ago and she gave up for 9 years and then started again and I asked her why and she just did not know why. However there is no way I will lecture someone on smoking.

One of the girls at work her Dad has given up 20 plus times and he just can not do it, bless him. I was interested to see what triggers people to start again, so we can avoid.

I gave up for 9 month when I was pregnant with my first son. It wasn't a choice, it was a must! They made me sick as hell! BUT, after I had him, week later, the cravings came back like I had never quit ( weird I know ) ... So I started again... ( dick head I know ) :D

Then I gave up for 1 week in October 08. I did 1 week, then at something I thought was stressful, started again ( even though now I know it wasn't stressful at all... and I just wanted to make it look stressful so I didn't look bad for starting smoking again ) ;)

This time I have been quit since 23rd March this year .... I have had some Crap thrown at me in that time!! will a cig stop it happening? or help me deal with it? LMAO will it F......rig as like :D ... So there ya go... my pathetic attempts, and the REAL McCOY!

My first quit lasted 4 years- then I started working in a pub, after being at home with babies, and on my first shift I had 'just one'. Hmmm, idiot! Second quit a few months, but I was very blase about the whole thing, did not take it seriously. 3rd time just a couple of weeks- each quit has been scuppered by the same thing! So, this time I had to deal with it differently- it's not a 'habit', it's a drug addiction, and I cannot have evn one little puff. Knowing that makes me not want to smoke like I did on previous quits- wierd eh?

So, 4th time for me!!

Christine don't worry about averages, cos my track record balances out yours. I must have quit 20+ times and never managed to do more than 3 days without having a sneaky smoke. I would ten spend weeks, sometimes months, pretending I didn't smoke but having crafty fags wherever possible.

The big difference is that all those other quits were because other people ( parents, boyfriends, ex hubby etc) thought I should quit. This time it's for ME. Therefore I want to succeed

Easy when you know how.

This is my second quit. I quit once before for 6 months. For the life of me I don't remember why I started back. I think it was a deliberate re-start. This time is the first time I really wanted to quit. I had always thought I would get sick of smoking one day and quit. Yea, right. I honestly worry that I will start back in the future. However, when I think back on the hell I went through on the first 14 days, no way am I going through that again.

I was going to post but Lily has said it all....LOL I convinced my ex and my family that I had stopped for over a year and all the time I was smoking in my car at work and even had cigs in a jar on the bathroom window sill to have a crafty one out of the window....

Its now that matters.....xx

this is my 4th attempt.

attempt 1: i was quit for 6 months (thereabouts)

attempt 2: i was quit for 8 months. Caved in on christmas day :/

attempt 3: I caved in on day 4

attempt 4: is this quit. I am nearly 5 full calendar months done.

Thing is.. you learn from your previous quits.. noone wants to make the same mistakes twice.

After smoking for 50+ years I cannot remember how many times I tried and failed to quit

nsd_user663_5598 profile image

Had a few healf hearted attempts and lasted about 24 hours. Don't think it helped that I wasn't doing it for myself...I wanted to smell lovely for hubby

I lasted for a whole week on Zyban, then decided I could get away with having just the one fag...WRONG!!!!!

This is my last and longest ever quit! Although I've worked out that by the time I get to age 72 my lungs should be just as good as someone who's never smoked....so I may take it up again then :D

Stopped when I was pregnant for 2 years - started again.

In 1983 (goodness was it that long ago) stopped for 8 months but then for some stupid reason started again.

I think when we are young we believe we are invincible!

Plenty of good intentions in the intervening years but was never really serious.

So I suppose this is my third time - and my final time because this time I have educated myself and really believe in my ability to do this.

Oh Soosy...pregnant for 2 years  that must be some king of record!!??

Luckily with my first 2 pregnancies there was no mention of not smoking so I kept on puffing 20/30 a day :o

10 years later and third pregnancy they suggested maximum 6 a day. Think I managed cutting it down to 10 a day. He was my lightest baby.

Both my daughters stopped straight away with each pregnancy but the cravings came back soon after each birth...strange

This is my first attempt for over 25 years, I have smoked for 40 years. I tried champix but on day 3 felt so rough I threw them in the bin. I went on an Allen Carr course and then went home and listened to the cd for 5 days, then went CT. I did start Nicquit lozenges after 15 days, it was those or a fag !!!!!

I sincerely hope that the stats are wrong as I really could not go through the last 35 days ever again so no alternative but to keep going.

Interesting reading, this is why I never want to become that ranting ex smoker.

My problem is if I gave in and smoked I honestly do not think I would attempt this again, so that's why I won't fail and that's always been my mind set.

Over the years people have wanted me to quit (funny enough never my non smoking hubby) and I refuse to give up for anyone but me. Pressure off others never worked, warnings on cigarette packages, doctors, ads etc never worked with me. You have to want it yourself.

Mind you I can now understand why people do not actually tell you the hell you go through!!

theres too much in here that had me nodding my head to quote em all, so i'll just say, great thread!

I have tried to give up about 4 times but this is the only time ive made it out of the 3 week stage. this HAS to be it for me. I fought with all I had to get here. It concerns me greatly that people have been quit way longer than me and gone back to it. But the comment about it not being a habit but a drug addiction is the way I need to start considering this as well, so thanks for that comment deedeebel.

One of the factors in my quit has been the support of this board, without it I may have caved by now. I was wondering if that was a factor in our quits being more successful this time round??

I would like to add that although I have quit before, I had a different mind set. This time I have done it only for me and not for the 'naggers' I had around me. I also understand now that I am a nicotine addict and that I can never have so much as another puff!

However, I think for me it has been a matter of accepting those facts and just getting on with it. Like everyone else it really hasn't been easy - a real roller coaster and I never ever ever want to go through these last 5 weeks again.
