Never thought I would get past 5 days

Hi All,

This is my first time here and this is my quit story so far.

My parents were both very heavy smokers and owned a tobacconist shop. With so much smoke around me I figure I was a passive smoker from birth, although I only actually smoked myself from the age of 6.

For over 40 years I smoked somewhere between 30 and 40 hand rolled cigarettes every day.

I had been under considerable pressure from friends and family to stop smoking for quite some time and earlier this year I decided to try and stop.

I smoked the last gram of my tobacco stock, and applied my first patch, on 3rd August.

To be honest I did not think I would succeed and my quit nurse said the same thing when I saw her for the last time. For the first few weeks it seemed as though I was playing a game to keep other people happy. It was only after supporting my wife through the death of her mother, without a smoke, that I felt I had a serious chance of quitting.

I removed my last patch on Wednesday morning and have now been NRT free for 72 hours, and survived – lol. The relevant data is summarised at the bottom of this ramble.

In my very humble opinion, since I am only a first time quitter, the most important thing is to get rid of all cigarettes, or tobacco as in my case, before you quit. I knew I would get past the first 5 days but never thought I would make it anywhere near this far. Why, because I had got rid of all my baccy and it was 5 days before I could get to anywhere to buy more.

I wish you all a successful quit,

Roger

Wow Roger what a story, congratulations on stopping smoking. How did you manage to do it at age 6, a couple of my grandchildren are that age and they are still little really?

Welcome to our online family, we are always here to help. There are some good articles for reading in our signatures, it helps a lot to have an understanding of the nicotine addiction, to stay stopped. You could also read posts around the same time as you to see what is going on with the others, also have a look at the long term quitters, I found that good as it shows how things can be further down the line and gives us something to work to.
