second day and its so hard!

After several attempts over the last 6 months of trying to quit for various reasons and using various methods and combinations of NRT and even just willpower alone - unsuccessfully.

I started again on the patches after visiting my gp and asking about zyban, only to be told i had to try again for 8 weeks on patches first. I started on patches on the 29th October, then smoked 5 cigarettes on the 30th then another 5 on the 1st November and another 10 on the morning of the 2nd then tried again. Today (the 3rd) and as i write this i am up to 29 hours smoke free)

have made an appointment with the doctors again for friday the 6th to get a prescription for champix or zyban, as i was told by my local nhs stop smoking service that i could just go straight on to either of these drugs and didnt need to wait 8 weeks.

I am finding walking very helpful as well as werthers originals and lemon sherbets.

Hi Glass

Well done you for getting to day 2 - you're obviously doing something right.

Never heard of having to try the patches for 8 weeks before getting the Champix or Zyban. Not sure how Zyban works but with Champix you start it while you're smoking and in less than 14 days the craving for Nicotene is gone (you're then left with 'just' the habit to get rid of).

I just went to the stop smoking clinic, told them I tried patches, gum and the electronic cigarettes in the past and now I wanted Champix. They put me on the course straight away, and they work! I'm on day 7. Some tense moments getting here, but the people on this site are very good at getting you through for a bit longer.

Thanks again

zyban works in exactly the same way as Champix. You smoke normally for the first 7-10 days and on day 8 or day 11 (whichever suits you best) you stop.

One tablet to begin with and then on they 7 two tablets for the rest of the course.

Well done

Hi,

Your doing fabulously.

I am also on day 2 of quitting but Im using Champix. Ive tried Zyban before but found it had amphetamine like effects on me and I was still awake at 3 in the morning doing hoovering which was good for my house but I was exhausted during the day. So if you do get your doc to prescribe something Id recommend Champix. It does make you feel sick but that wears off.

i found day 1 - 4 a real lot to overcome...but you CAN do this, as i heard somewhere (not sure where)

believe in yourself

as all of us say, you CAN overcome this, just dont think of em & nothing to do with them

good luck & try not to break glasses

Hi glass

From what I've heard and read, the prescribing of Champix (don't know much about Zyban) is a bit of a post-code lottery. Some doctors will prescribe it without issues, others want it to be 'a last resort', so try to ensure that you've tried all the alternatives first. Whether this is because of the costs entailed or the risks of side effects I'm not sure.

Also, I'd try for Champix rather than Zyban if I was you.

Hi Glass

Well done on starting your quit !!

Am on patches myself but to begin with i supplemented them with nico gum, having read alot of the stuff on here I realised that i really didnt want to take in any more nico then i had to so came off the gum but it really helped for the first few days. Having been a heavy smoker i really think I need the comfort of the patches for a little while longer at least.

I havent tried Champix or Zyban but I think the most important thing is to get your head round the quit so read all the stuff on here it really helps !! good luck and hang on in theresi

Made me laugh

KTbird,

Ok, that made me laugh out loud at my desk! I need that laugh too! I am allergic to the patch, but I still wear them, I just itch and have whelps for days, but I'm not smoking!

Again, thanks for the laugh, and a good way to get what you want!
