Advice plse - Champix & Chest Infections

Hi,

I came across this site whilst trying to find a way of giving up smoking. It looked so good, I decided to register.

I'm still smoking and have tried most quitting method over some time. A few months ago I started Champix, hoping that it would the 'wonder cure' but within 2 days suffered a terrible chest infection and the nurse told me to stop taking them, saying it is a side effect. I was so determined to quit, but it knocked my confidence. Unfortunately, the nurse at our surgery isn't very supportive. When i initially went in she just looked disapproving when i said I'd tried other methods and failed. she actually she would give me hampix, but i'd probably fail at that too!!:( (very supportive).

I would like to try again on Champix. Has anyone eperienced the same side effect? Have they tried it again and it worked ?

Thanks for reading this.

Nick

Hi Nick :D

Well done deciding you want want to quit a big step in itself

I to tried almost every method there was ober the years but this time I too used champix with out ant problems

I don't think it was champix that caused the chest infection I am going to give you a link to a site that deals with champix as I wasn't completely sure if it was a side effect or not I found this a while back it has a list of side efeccts among other information about champix I couldn't see it listed

champixinfo.co.uk/ I'm sorry your nurse was so unhelpful but you'll find plenty of help here on the forum

Below is my standard welcome and advice post which I try and give all new memebrs

Just never give up on yourself or your determination to quit. There is so much more to life than being a slave to that addiction, its took me quite some weeks to fully realise it myself, at first i just wanted to quit for a small list of reasons, now my reasons to stay quit form a list so much longer.

Good luck for what you seek to acheive: to quit smoking. I hope you find the determination and method you need to quit soon

Good Luck and keep motivated on quitting smoking. I have been on Champix for 2 weeks and quit smoking 3 days ago (although I had a few puffs from my husban) and am committed to winnning the battle.

I'm with Margaret. I cannot believe that a chest infection would be from Champix. If you have a chest infection it would be either viral or bacterial.

From what I read, it sounds like you need a new doctor but you would be the best judge of that.

I hope you're feeling better and good luck with your quitting however you do it.

Hi Nick,

Sorry to hear that about your doctors surgery, and we keep hearing what angels the NHS are?

I havent used this Champix, but a lot of people on here claim it works, so id be inclined to try it again if I was you, after all, what have you got to lose?

Regards

Paul

Thanks - I'm going for it !!

Hi all,

Just wanted to say thanks. With your encouraging words in my mind I went to the Doctors today and started again on Champix. He's going to monitor things a bit more closely ('cos of the chest infection) but regardlessly I AM GOING TO DO IT.... :)

I'm determined to break free from this controlling evil!!

Thanks so much again, I can't believe that total strangers have been so kind and understanding.

Hi Nick I hope that this time it works for you :)

Sometimes you just have to be pushy and tell the doc what YOU want to do.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing. You'll get plenty of support on here :)

Hi Nick,

Glad to hear that your going to try it again.

We might be strangers, but as ex-smokers, or in the process of giving up, were the only ones who can understand each other. A non-smoker (like some of my friends for example) can never ever understand what were going through, and those friends who are still smoking either say they will never quit, or say yea yea, i'll quit next week etc.

Regards

Paul

Well I'm on the way!

Dear all,

I just thought I would let you know that I did go to the doctors again. I restarted the Champix and no chest infection!:D

I'm on day 8 still having a puff or two, but hating the taste and throwing it away! Been far more luckier than some threads I've read..no headaches or major problems. So here goes, decided stop day is Monday (Champix Day 11)!

I'm reading the Allen Carr book too, just for some extra support.

This forum is great and without it, I'd probably still been thinking about doing something one day!

Thanks to you all.

Nick.. you do well to read the allen carr book, but you might want to also check for this DVD too, sometimes a picture says a 1000 words, and you memory stores images far easier than words.

Fantastic news that you've begun your quit course, the very best of luck to you, lean on us all if you need any support.. but also just let us know how your getting on.. the main point being.. don't quit alone! your among friends!!

Into Day 5 !!

Hi all,

Well I'm into Day 5 SMOKE FREE!!:D

To my surprise it hasn't been too bad, no grumpiness, no great urges to kill:)

in fact I've started exercising and even lost a few pounds (many more still to go though), but it's a start.

Tonight will be a challenge, I'm going to friends for a meal, all 4 smoke and in the house. But I'm determined not to break it now. Wish me luck

If anybody reading this who is still smoking and looking for inspiration/help/support, well you can't be in a better place. I was at that point about 2 weeks ago and by reading posts on this site and with it's support I have become smoke free!! I smoked about 30 a day for the past 10+ years, I've tried all sorts to give up and failed. Champix is helping, reading Allen Carr's book reinforces things, but i'm convinced it's support of people who understand what it is like to be a smoker and give up...that has been of greatest help. THANKS TO YOU ALL xx

Quit Day was Monday 7th Sept 2009

Restart day - When Hell freezes over !!
