I have just smoked my last cigarette EVER!! Threw away my lighter and am determined to QUIT! Quit for a year and half before cold turkey and know that I can do it again. Mind is already playing games with me, but I really really want to do this.....any tips on ignoring the mind tricks anyone?

Hey Embo... It's my day 1 also... feeling just like you described. I'm finding I cant sit still, and to be honest i've just planned dinner for tonight and tomorrow night, and writing a shopping list for the weekend! I didnt realise quitting would turn me to domestic goddess, but there we are... heh.

Just stay busy i think, if you're not at work go get physical!! (any way you can think of! hehe)... apparently it works... I think i shall abuse my moutain bike to get me through the harder times when i get out of work!

GOOD LUCK! You can do it ;)

Deep breathes. Maintaining that you are the one in control here now.. not the nagging voice. The addiction you are breaking can and will try these little mind games.. its just a test of your metal.. if it breaks your metal, it gets to you, so thats why you really have to rise above it and be very firm with yourself that you are not giving into it.. the mind games, or any other dirty trick that the addiction uses to get you to feed it what it wants.

I was just honest with myself, i made the bed i found myself trapped in.. and i would get myself out of it. No matter how hard it got.

and when the addiction gets desparate for its fix.. your stern denial will eventually make it go like a spoilt kid who didnt' get its own way.

We are only really fighting with ourself when we quit smoking.. the addiction splits us in half. the half that wants to quit is you. then there is the other half still that the addiction has control of, thats the side of you that has doubt. You however, have hope and determination on yourself, and while you have that, you can reclaim some of the doubting self back a day at a time, until the addiction doesn't have much of you left to get at .. and thats when you find it easier.

Don't let the git get to you.. you will beat him, you've done it before, he's an old adversary!! :)

thanks guys...it has now been an hour and half and to be honest, I haven't really thought about it too much and haven't got a craving yet....having a healthy salad for lunch and then may go out for a walk....

Fingers crossed it goes well for you too, Needacuppa. This forum is great...strength in numbers eh?

Good luck both Embo and Needacuppa.

Stay strong. I remember being at the same place you are, and can't believe I have completed week 4 today with some pretty stressful times thrown in for good measure. We all have it in ourselves to do beat this "thing".

What Jase says about the mind is so true. When I have hit hurdles, I have been telling myself that having a smoke won't make "it" better, only make me feel worse. My body has screamed at me a few times in protest, but I think having the right mind set has been the key to my success.

Keep us updated with your progress!

Hi guys,

Hope you got through day 1.

I found reading the link in Margs welcome re-affirmed my decision to quit, especially the damage to the lungs etc.

Also, I think that we generally look on alcoholics and drug users unsympathetically and expect them to quit at a hat, so why not us? and I repeat that thought to myself.

Lastly, its said that the pain of giving up smoking is 1/100th that of a Heroin addict, so thank your lucky stars how easy its going to be for you compared to a hard core drug user!

hope this helps.

Goodluck :D

the mind games were the worst by far for me. I used patches and went to a stop smoking centre to group sessions without this i would not have quit but everyone is different in the techniques that help them.

I think either stuff to chew suck nibble on are great like sweets or liquorice, i went through loads and still am  because that gave my mouth something to do while my mind was trying to justify having a fag.

I google'd lung cancer aswell and printed out a few deseased lungs and posted a few up around the house and my car so i could be reminded what will happen if i did start smoking again and how seriouse an illness it is.

Its important too to take it a day at a time dont think in terms of a week a month years etc think like if you have justified it to yourself your gonna have to say to yourself 'lets wait 30 mins' last abit longer then ill have a smoke. Then take it from there.

looking at the big picture did no good for me i did it hour by hour :D and it was tough i couldnt imagine doing it cold turkey u have my greatest respect.

Quit day 1

Hallo everyone!

Nice to see there's still people quitting on this site (as if there wouldn't be!!).

As you can see from the number of posts, I quit for 4 months last year and then started again...the evening before I got married, as it goes.

Since then I've been stopping and starting and fiddling about, but I've just reread the Nicodemon homepage and enough is enough!

I've been 3 weeks with the puffer again and it's time to take the plunge.

To me, this will count as day 1 of my serious quit and no going back.

Looks like we have the makings of a team here today...

Anyone want to join forces...just so we can look out for one another and strengthen the determination?

They say a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved and I reckon it works the other way round for determination..share it and double it..

So....anyone in????

Bill

Ta

OK...Thanks Marg,

I, also, do believe knowledge is the key.

Just read about nicotine being a promoter of body alkalinity and excitement/stress being a producer of body acidity and hence the craves associated with stress, excitement and alchohol (also a producer of acid body balance) - they trigger a need to realign the pH with something that produces alkaline.

Wonder if Ginseng would be any good for helping that...Anyone tried it?

Bill

.

never saw that before and it explains a lot to me about the associations ...

Here goes

Hi Bill, I smoked my last cigarette about 30 minutes ago so really there's not much of day 1 left lol. I'm so glad that I found this forum - it does help to have others who are going through exactly the same - here's to us all!:)

I'll second that!

Good luck on your quit, be the most stubborn you've ever been and if your mind trys to convince you to smoke, you tell it sternly.. NO. Don't budge. Become as hard to move as a rock. Cravings come and go.

The only way is up!

Hi Jan,

How are you planning to go about it?

Cold Turkey...as lots of people on here do... or by one of the other less dramatic methods.

I have got into the habit of using one of those inhalators, which certailnly does help...but there's the basic 'I don't want to be a nicotine addict' thing to get through.

Right now I've decided to abandon the puffers and hit the road naked (well...you know what I mean!).

Best wishes for your quit. It can be done. Every day you don't fill your lungs with smoke is a good day for your body.

I find making sure I drink enough water is a great help.

Let me know how you're getting on...
