;)Hi Everyone,

I am on my 5th day of not smoking now & after reading some of the threads on this forum decided I should join you all as well :) I have been smoking for the best part of 34 years apart from a 2 year break (Why, oh why did I start again ) Two years ago I was told I had COPD (Was 47 at the time ) and have been trying to stop. To be honest I am ALWAYS trying to stop. The difference is this time that my chest is SO bad, I cough constantly, am out of breath climbing the stairs etc, etc. I had my spirometry test done last week & my lung age came out at 78. I was not surprised but it gave me the push I needed. That & the e-mail my son sent me which consisted of pics of him, my daughter in law & 4 year old grandaughter. In each photo was a speech bubble telling me how they felt about losing me to smoking. I sobbed my heart out. I asked him to be honest & blunt & I am so glad he did though was upset I upset him (If that makes sense). Better to be upset when I am still here than not though. Guess I have rambled enough for a first go hey guys. Keep going - We can do it xx

Thank you for your kind words Marg. Have read some of your posts so feel like I know you already LOL. I HAVE to do it this time & hopefully my hubby will follow suit. He is very good & dissappears outside for a ciggie & I am sure he will stop when he is ready as well. (Hope so, it's very smelly isn't it LOL).

Have a stinking cold, bordering on man flu, at the mo so am off work. Hopefully when I go back I will still be able to keep off them. We cannot smoke at work so used to make up for it on the way to & from & at lunch times :o The morning is my absolute worst time. Used to get up, light up with one hand & put the kettle on with the other. Classy hey?? I hope that wears of soon.

Hi Neverstoptrying,

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your decision to quit. For a number of reasons now is the right time for you, and if you are determined you will succeed. Those pictures from your son have clearly had a huge impact.

Being on your 5th day means that you have already got through some of the toughest parts.

Strange how as a smoker, if there were times when we could predict a lack of opportunity to smoke, we would have "extra" ones to store up and tide us through. What were we thinking!

Post on here often, I have found this forum hugely instrumental in my quit. And read up too - there are some very good items on the sites that Marg has referred to.

Keep stong

Hi Neverstoptrying :D

I'm sorry you're off work with a bad cold [sorry it can't be man flu] we don't get that ;)

I'm sure hubby will stop at some point

As you can't smoke at work that will work in your favour, you'll just have the journey to and fro and lunch times and I'm sure you can do that

I know what you mean about mornings, but I was worse than you I used to get up wander into the living room light up and then go and put the kettle on  even classier eh

Don't worry it will ease of soon and just be a case of somethings missing, but that will go as well Promise

Love

Still me

Hi Trendy, Thankyou. My motto after years & years & countless attempts at stopping was you never fail unless you stop trying to quit hence the name!

Nice to talk to people who are going through or have been through the same things & genuinely know how you are feeling :)

Hi Neverstoptrying

Well done stopping the evil nicotine.

I also have COPD so know exactly what it is like. Great that you have stopped before it stops you because it will. Do lots of reading and learn so you never go back.

I send you good wishes.

Hiya

Hi there, Thanks for your message of support. I know now I have no choice but to give up as I am sure happened with you. No more of that "Just one more" business! The silly thing was that the more I worried about my chest the more I wanted to smoke & then felt bad about smoking. The same old vicious circle. Being told my lung age was 78 last week really brought it home though. Have you found your COPD has improved since you stopped? Well done by the way :) xx

Hi

Like you the more I worried the more I wanted to smoke it was a crutch. I did not believe for a long time that smoking was the problem, I think because they blame so much on cigarettes it was a good excuse to contradict them and say there are other ways to get it. I have been told I have halted the progression of the disease, hope that's good. They didn't tell me how old my lungs are, probably a good job. I was quite well until a bit over a year ago so it doesn't always give you loads of time to see it coming. You have definitely made a very good choice.

Hi Jackie :D

If you've halted the progression of the disease that's definitely good in fact very good

Hi Jackie, Glad to hear that you COPD is not getting worse. I am hoping that will be the same outcome for me also. Already my chest is better, not as breathless as I was. Wish my rattly chest would improve especially at night, it's like drowning & I am tired now from not sleeping well :( Guess I am trying to hurry things on a little as it's only been a short time :)

Neverstoptrying

You keep up the quit and things will get better. The not sleeping does go with the not smoking and you may find you start to cough quite a bit as your lungs start to clear but it will all settle down. If you cough for too long get your doctor to check to make sure it's not an infection.

Marg

Thanks for your helpful words, sometimes I wonder about what they say to me but somehow what you said made me feel hopeful. It was a nurse who told me that the disease would be halted, but I often think they have a lot of knowledge to share and they are easier to talk to. Mostly I don't know what qestions to ask the doctors or sometimes maybe afraid to ask, maybe at next clinic I will ask some more.

Day 6

Hi Jackie, My doctor told me that if I stopped smoking although the damage done would not be repaired it would also not get any worse (no more than a non smoker). Having said that the nurse I sa last said the little hairs that flush all the yuk out would grow back as smoking singes them & stops them working. Whatever, stopping Can ONLY be a GOOD thing for us all :p

Thanks for that I am really glad you told me. It just goes to prove that as we help another we also get help ourselves, the power of sharing is amazing. You have made me feel loads better.

Thanks

Jackie

Thanks Marge,

Have a great weekend hun. Think the people of Northampton thought I was a bit mad tonight as my hubby decided to have a ciggie in the car on the way home tonight so I had my window down in the pooring rain because I did not want to breathe in his smoke. Am terrified of making my COPD worse now especially after looking at the sites you recommended (which are great :))

I would never nag him as I know all to well how that makes you feel but will have to ask politely not too smoke near me (EEK). Was a funny sight though. G. xxx
