Food for thought (let me know what u think!)

Throughout the entire history of humanity, the most uncomfortable and at the same time most fascinating subject for people has been – death. Whoever says that they are not afraid of death is lying, simply because it is human nature to be afraid of the unknown. In search for answers people have turned to various religions, and made their own peace with the subject and came to terms that death is inevitable.

What is very much surprising for me, and I am sure for many others (this includes smokers), is how can something that is so damaging and harmful to a person’s health, and has been proven to be a direct cause of a number of illnesses that have ended lives of thousands prematurely, be so difficult to stop. As Allen Carr pointed out in his book, the way to find the answer is not by listing the adverse effects or disadvantages (even though there are none advantages).

I believe that the root cause to finding why people continue to smoke and slowly kill themselves goes further than popular misconception about smoking being a habit or a lack of knowledge (that majority of addicts have) about the drug that is consumed continuously (nicotine). I believe that somewhere deep down for every smoker, the root is death. Could it be that the answer is so simple, that people just simply want to know what is going to kill them. Almost every single one will say they want to stop at some point in the future, but the truth is that we will never really know what the future holds; no one can promise tomorrow.

You can’t bring back yesterday, so live today like there is no tomorrow. Or perhaps there is no today or tomorrow, there is just life that can bring you tears and joy. Just remember that you don’t need to continuously poison yourself while you are living it.

Hi Prophet

I agree with Dubbs but

Life is very precious to me at the moment and I try to live every day as I should because I came close to losing it last year I can now truthfully say I do not fear death I remember my Dad saying to me death is just like walking from one room to another I didn't believe him then

Sorry if this sounds morbid to you

Marg

I don't think that I am afraid of death, or that I ever saw cigarettes as a way to get there... I honestly think that the reason I smoked was because I was bought up during a time when it was still the thing you did. it wasn't rebellious, cos everyone did it. Going to a party and not smoking was unusual. As was going to the youth club, and a few years later the pub. I was brainwashed into thinking that smoking was giving me something that meant the risk to my health was acceptable.

A bit like driving fast, or riding a motorbike. It's fun - dangerous but fun.

But it's not fun. Or cool. Or anything else positive. Smoking does nothing for you but slowly kill you.

You can’t bring back yesterday, so live today like there is no tomorrow. Or perhaps there is no today or tomorrow, there is just life that can bring you tears and joy. Just remember that you don’t need to continuously poison yourself while you are living it.

That paragraph basically sums up my attitude to life these days. I wasted far too much of my youth ruining my health. I will never be 20 and full of energy - I wasted that chance smoking my health away.... but I sure as hell am going to try and be the fittest 36 year old around. It's my 35th birthday in a couple of weeks.... by my 36th I intend to be fit again.

As for the way to go? I dunno - anything that's quick enough so that my family don't have to watch me die.

Welcome to the forum,

What an unusual 1st post, do tell if you are quitting or have quit?

I believe that the root cause to finding why people continue to smoke and slowly kill themselves goes further than popular misconception about smoking being a habit or a lack of knowledge (that majority of addicts have) about the drug that is consumed continuously (nicotine). I believe that somewhere deep down for every smoker, the root is death. Could it be that the answer is so simple, that people just simply want to know what is going to kill them. Almost every single one will say they want to stop at some point in the future, but the truth is that we will never really know what the future holds; no one can promise tomorrow.

I can see where you are coming from; people do engage in all sorts of dangerous activities in the make of enjoyment. However, on the whole I think smokers smoke because they are addicted to nicotine, and they expect quitting to be hard. As simple as that.
