Hi All

Im new to this site and today is my first day on quitting! I was supposed to quit yesterday but had a relapse which is not making me feel very positive however I had smoked 4 by this time yesterday morning in panic before putting the patch on and I havent had any today so there is hope! I then went all yesterday until evening when I had another one so I have written yesterday off and plan today as my first day!!! Up to now no cigs!!!!

I decided to look around the internet yesterday for Forums to get some support and this one looked the best. You all seem to be supporting each other and giving good advice. I hope I can join you all and stay stopped!!!!

Welcome sarah

You will have great support here. Everyone is doing the same thing and have had the same thoughts/feelings. Dont worry to much about yesterday and dont think about tomorrow just today. If need be take each hour as it comes once you have a day or two under your belt things start to get easyer. The mornings are a lot of peoples worse time so your doing great. Keep posting it helps a lot. Linda xxxxxxxxx

You can join us all and stay stopped. Anyone can - it's not that hard.

Don't get me wrong, it's not going to be easy - but it's not the hardest thing in the world either.

I would suggest that you read a lot to educate yourself as to what you can expect while you quit, while your body recovers. Links in peoples signatures on here will take you to a wealth of useful info.

Most of all, just take it easy. It's not going to be a walk in the park but there are a few things I used to tell myself at the start that helped a lot.

1) Any situation will not be helped by smoking. No matter how stressful it is, a smoke will not help. The situation will still be the same bu you just wasted another 5-10 minutes by smoking.

2) A craving will go away on its own, without a cigarette. Just don't try to run from it. Acknowledge it as what it is, a craving - an empty feeling, a bit like hunger. A little voice telling you you want to smoke. However, you KNOW you don't want to - so tell it you aren't going to smoke and move on.

3) Enjoy the positives, every hour - every 10 minutes if you need to, congratulate yourself on continuing to choose - continue to embrace the fact that you are choosing to be free.

4) Embrace the negatives - If you crave, thats good! That means you are not smoking and not smoking is what this is all about! Soon, very soon the cravings will lessen and you will win. You are already winning by not smoking NOW.

Well done on the decision to quit, and please make yourself a regular here - we can't help if we don't know whats happening.... and posting on here will help you even before anyone answers.

Welcome to being smoke free :)

Welcome to the forum Sarah,

I would suggest that you read a lot to educate yourself as to what you can expect while you quit, while your body recovers. Links in peoples signatures on here will take you to a wealth of useful info.

That's the truth! But since Stuart was too lazy to post any links himself I'll oblige :D:p:D

The objective as far as I am concerned is to change the way you think about smoking. If you can get away from the idea that smoking is some king of forbidden fruit and understand that quitting is not sacrificing but gaining a better life then you are going to find it much easier to stay stopped.

Best wishes

Nic

Hi Sarah - welcome to the forum. The best place to be to rant and rave, have a laugh and more importantly get the best advice going in my opinion. You have taken the first step of your quit and as everyone else says it will get easier.

All the Best

Hi Sarah

Hope things are still going ok for you. Remember that when you get through your first 72 hours the nicotine will have left your system, that's such a big achievement in itself.

You can do this.

Good luck xx

Hi

Hi sorry to crash post ,i too have quit smoking today i used to come on this site alot when i quit last year when i found out i was pregnant with my second son ,as soon as i quit i felt so good and did so well but when my son arrived 7 weeks early and had to go to special care i came home and stupidly thought im no longer pregnant what harm will just one do !!!!!!!!!!!!and within weeks i was back to square one again .This time im not quitting for any other reason than for myself i have to have an operation on a disc prolapse which as been so painful and i thought this cant be doing my health any good(i have really bad health problems also) and i dont want my sons to think as they get older that it is cool to smoke .I have just got an appointment for my operation for the 7th of december and i am terrified and could have easily went outside and had a smoke but i didnt and i feel so good .Not been as bad as i thought it was going to be today and am taking each hour as an achievement ,good luck everyone claire x

Thanks

Hi thanks to both of you for your posts just had a bit of a wobble but managed to get through it .I think getting my operation appointment has caused me to become a little bit upset i didnt think i would be getting operation done so soon and it has come as a bit of a shock ,typical that it arrives the day i decide to quit but i didnt want to be having op whilst still being a smoker so this should keep me going knowing that i cant give in now .I remember last year thinking you've done 1 day do you want to have one smoke to have to repeat that day again that seemed to get me through hope it works again !!!! thanks for your suppport claire x

Day 2

Hi All

Claire glad to hear that you quit yesterday too - good luck. I am now on my second day and hope you are also. Ive had a look at some of the links you all sent and they are really good and great to keep going back to. I am finding it hard, at the moment all my thoughts seem to be around cigarettes and not having one but I am trying hard not to see this as giving up something I enjoy cos how can I possibly enjoy something that is so bad for me!!!!!!!

nsd_user663_3633 profile image
nsd_user663_3633

Well done, getting to day 2 is one of the biggest achievements - it truly is!

It's natural to feel the way you do as your body cleanses itself, take it as a positive.

You can never be free of cigarettes if you do not go through this process - your body has to heal.... and if you look like at it like that, it's a miraculous thing.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Well done on getting through the 1st day.

Remember to move yourself along to the appropriate "room" when you post, it shows you your progress and getting into each new room is a significant milestone, which you should feel very proud of.

All the best,

Nic

The 1st few days are a bit of an endurance but it gets better quickly, honest.

Focus on what you've achieved already, and hang in there!

Its all worth it in the end!

nsd_user663_3633

Well done to you too, Claire.

You are both doing really well, I hope you realise it.

If boredom (or more likely, just having time to think) presents a problem, find something to occupy yourself... even if it's just play some music and sing while you do something else!

Anything to occupy your mind and get you thinking about something else.

Have a good day today, Both of you.
