I'm probably not so much a hardcore smoker as most of the people on this forum, but for about the 6th time in the space of 14 months I'm trying to quit smoking again by the only method I've ever tried...just no longer smoking.

I have been smoking since the age of 16 (am almost 28) and had given up for 2.5 years but when my dad died in may 07 I started up again :(...I believed that giving up again would be easy but so far I have found the 'thinking' about smoking to be harder than the physical cravings I get...and have so far succeeded only in giving in.

I am currently trying the old substitute a cigarette for a standard stick of chewing gum trick. Whether this works or not remains to be seen but right now I really want to quit

Welcome on board Greg. Just come on here if you need support at all. They are very helpful and you can also have a good laugh which I think is also therapeutic in stopping smoking (that's the second time in two days I've used that word. Think I'll make it word of the week:D).

Seriously, now you have made the decision to quit try drinking water, keeping your hands busy by doing hobbies or just coming on here. After a while I found I hadn't thought about those horrible sticks at all. Come on here if you want to rant and rave you'd be surprised how that helps as well.

Anyway, Greg, keep on posting and let us know how you are getting on. You are not on your own.;)

Will do.

Have never really tried the drinking water technique...one other thing I do try however is to stand outside with a hot brew (in the spot where I'd usually be smoking) to simulate the sense of calm and tranquility I experience from smoking.
