Consider yourself an EX or NON smoker?

This is a very confusing question but I will answer it as best I can.
I would like to consider myself as a non-smoker but at the same time I am conscious of the fact that I used to smoke and now no longer do so and therefore would be considered as an ex-smoker.
I think looking at it logically if you have never smoked you are a non-smoker and if you have given up smoking you are now an ex-smoker.
Does that makes sense?

Yes it makes sense - although the key to your response is this:
"I would like to consider myself as a non-smoker but at the same time I am conscious of the fact that I used to smoke and now no longer do so"
I personally don't think the word ex should come into it. What do other people think - the reason I ask is because this can make a massive pschological difference to those people that are stopping smoking.
I'm an EX Smoker
If you've been a Smoker - you can never again be a NON Smoker - It's like losing one's virginity
Just my humble opinion btw
errrmmmm that'll be an EX
EX = "used to be but is not now"
NON= "never has been and still isn't"
:D:D
Actually.....i still think of myself as a smoker, who just isnt at the moment, im only a few months down the line and judging by some others lapses i think i have a long way to go.
dont misunderstand me i have no intention of ever smoking again and i think eventually i will be and ex smoker (not a non) agree with OMT on that one - just not yet
I have been quit for 3 Months, 3 Weeks, 3 Days, 19 hours, 40 minutes and 4 seconds (115 days). I have saved £524.65 by not smoking 2,316 cigarettes. I have saved 1 Week, 1 Day and 1 hour of my life. My Quit Date: 01/01/2008 00:05
HmmMMMmmM somoe very interesting replies.
The consensus seems to be EX.
The reason i ask is because according to Allen Carr (the heavenly guide incarnate) psychologicaly one should consider themselves a non smoker as soon as they put out the last cigarette. I myslef used this technique and it helped me i do NOT smoke thus in the true sense of the word i am a non smoker i.e. I DO NOT smoke.
i am thankful for the responses - it is something I have been thinking about.
Anyone not replied, regardless of your quit method i am interested in knowing how you feel your status is now.
hmm kinda both I suppose, i'm a non smoker now, but cant really ignore a long part of my life when I was.
If pushed, I'd say ex.
Hi AF
I see myself as a non smoker.
People who smoke are smokers.
People who do not smoke are non smokers.
I don't smoke anymore so for me it is as easy as that.
When i stubbed out my last fag i became a non smoker.
I didn't approach it with a "let's see how long i can quit for" attitude and i don't need someone to consult a calendar and tell me whether i have been successful..
For the same reason i don't use a quit-meter. I've no interest is seeing how much i've saved or the number of fags not smoked in the same way that i don't keep a record of aircraft crashes i haven't been involved in or beers i haven't drunk. Cigarettes are no longer a part of my life other than this forum.
"i don't smoke" is the easist answer and usually ends the subject there and then.!
"ex-smoker" is of course grammatically correct but has a ring of regret to it...
"alms for an ex-leper...?"
"an EX-leper..?"
"That's right, sir, 16 years behind a veil and proud of it, sir.."
If you split up with your partner would you classify yourself as an ex girlfiriend or boyfriend ..........is it not like saying you cant be classed as single as you used to be in a relationship!
Depends how you look at it but i think non smoker............ mind u does a non smoker think themselves a non smoker ......no they think them selves as none of them!!!!!!!!!!
Crazy HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! elp

Yes, thats a good point. I think they help in some way in the early days of quitting, but I uninstalled mine a long time ago.
Definitely ex- , me.
But this has got me thinking, cos i can see the psychological difference between saying 'I'm an ex-smoker' and saying ' I'm a non-smoker'.
Being a 'Non-smoker' seems more grounded in the decision somehow...maybe I'll try getting my head around that for a while.
Thanks for the thought...Bill
PS and, at the same time, I absolutely 100% agree with Smirn above here!!! So the question is more about intention than about grammer or logic...is it ???
And it's SOOOO early in the morning, tooo!!!
I agree with Smirn It is only myself that can not take one puff. i am responsible Linda xx
