I am technically on Day Two since about 20 minutes ago.

I am not finding it easy. I am on my way to a meeting, which will be attended by a heavy smoker and a couple of other smokers, who will be smoking throughout. I don't know them well enough to tell them to stop. The meeting's on their premises and I have to attend. :(

This will be my first close contact with a smoker since quitting 24 hours and 20 minutes ago. How do I deal with it?

Plumski, see my reply in top tips..

If it's that "dodgy" for you, I'd be inclined to cancel, you're quit is more important this week, if one missed meeting isn't gonna get you sacked I'd sack it off myself! Love yourself more than ya job just for today I say! :D

Is it not illegal to smoke inside now or is the meeting outside?

Regrettably, it's an ongoing thing and I have to attend. It's as simple as that. I just can't wriggle out of it.

The thing is, whether I do it today or tomorrow or in a week, I have to come to terms with all the automatic instincts when in the company of smokers. (I started writing "other smokers" but I'm not one any more, am I?) :D

Much as I'd feel bad about relapsing today, I think I'd feel a lot worse about a relapse in a week or a month. That is, assuming I DO relapse. I honestly have no idea how I'm going to cope, but it will probably boil down to sitting there with a pen in my mouth for the entire meeting, getting more and more frustrated. I've got a fairly short fuse at the best of times, but this is gonna make it especially difficult.

Oh well, I have a whole packet of (non-nicotine) chewing gum, I wonder how many pieces I'll have gone through during the hour-long meeting? And then I'm off to the cinema with a mate. Coming out of the cinema is a big trigger for me, so I think more chewing gum to the rescue!

(Oh, and midget gems while watching the film) ;)

The meeting is outside, on their premises. Yeah, we're all aware of the legal ramifications, which is why they set up a special roof terrace for meetings. So not only will I be in the presence of several smokers, but we're going to be outside as well.

P.S. I have just noticed just HOW smelly my default jacket is. *ashamed*

I feel for you, good luck. just think when that meeting has finished and you walk away having not smoked you will feel great.

Each trigger you overcome becomes a lot easier the next time you are confronted with it.

Stay strong and get that jacket washed!!!

Do you know what Plumski - look at the smokers from the outside and pity them.

I used to stand outside in the pouring rain, cold wind etc. just to have that cigarette at lunch breaks at work. Now i look at the smokers and actually feel sorry for them.

It's not easy (understatement) but you will gain strength the longer you are quit............

Good luck :)

I find the XXX mints...the STRONGER extra strong mint (so it claims on the packet haha) help with craves a lil bit. I stick one in me gob and tell myself if I still really want a fag after I have done with the mint I will go have a fag. However, if I demolish the mint and still want a fag I just throw another mint in me mouth and tell myself yet again that I will have a smoke AFTER I have finished the mint...and so on and on and on...

have you adopted my guaranteed two stage plan then...?

1) simply commit to yourself that you'll always suck an extra strong mint before caving in to a crave and lighting up.

2) if the crave persists for longer than the mint lasts, see step No1.

hey, let's write a book and get rich...? :D

lol Austin...yeah why not! We could call it '101 things to do to while away a crave' :D

...or '101 CraveBusters' !!

I actually do the same thing, except it involves a piece of XXX chewing gum rather a mint sweetie.

My jaw is getting quite strong...

(Talking of XXX, I'll put anything chewy in my mouth; I'm not really keen on stuff that dissolves to nothingness.) ;)
