Urgent advice re. Champix please

I'm on Day 9 of Champix having chosen Day 11 (Valentine's Day) as my Quit Day BUT although I'm down to half my usual amount and not enjoying them so much, I'm still smoking. I'm wondering how you others on Champix did it - did you just wait until you felt ready or did you stick to your Quit Day even though you may have suffered? I've read of loads of people who just stopped even before their Quit Day but that miracle hasn't happened to me.

I would hate to move my Quit Day as I'm all geared up for it now but also I don't want it to be any harder than it should and if moving the day back a few days means I have to use less willpower than I think I should do it

Any advice please? When did you stop on Champix and why?

PS. And to whoever posted the message saying that this board was unhelpful - my question is exactly the reason we need 'seniors' for advice!

Hi, I think you'll find that sticking to your quit date is the best way.. have confidence in the fact that Champix will give you the extra support you might need. It's true that we're all diffrerent of course but that's my 2 pennyworth! Trust yourself and you'll be fine. I was and that was a miracle! Best of luck:)

Frenchkiss, I was in the same dilemma as you. In fact (due to some sort of twisted logic) I decided to smoke MORE leading up to my quit date which was day 10 of champix.

I was nervous that I would not even get through day 1 but as with steveh, some sort of miracle happened and i havent had one since (july 3rd 07). Champix really does seem to give you the extra support that you need. You are already committed to stop killing yourself, so stick with your date, dont worry if you havent cut back and prepare yourself (plans, treats, cash jar, write down your reasons, etc etc).

Best of luck !! Any questions, theres loads of successful champix quitters who are in various stages of quit who can help on this forum.

I started taking the tablets and smoked for the full 14 days before my quit day as l needed that amount of time to get my head round the idea of quitting. Even up to the 14th day, l still felt that l would not be able to do it, but, lo and behold, come the day, it was not nearly as bad as l expected it to be. In fact, the funny thing was, l was kind of looking foreward to the challenge. Just keep positive and keep coming back on here for support, and you'll be fine.:):):)

Hi there.

I am only a beginner with Champix. I am on day 15 of champix and quit on day 7. I could have carried on smoking although it tasted disgusting and i wasnt really craving.

I know everyone is different so this is only from my own experiences. I have waited for the miracle to happen but it hasnt.

Yeah I dont fancy smoking so thats what the champix is doing for me but I am still thinking of smoking alot and have had some bad moments. This could be because i do get stressed quite easily.

Yes Champix is a fantastic help but you do also have to really want to quit. Its not a craving that you will get but a thought and a habit that you need to get over.

I hope i havent said anything to put you off and I do think you should stick with your quit date, I am sure you will be fine.

Hi frenchkiss

I quit on day 11 of Champix and I can confirm that there was no miracle (ie. I did not suddenly thought I did not want to smoke) For me it was a decision and a leap of faith - the Champix really did help me in showing me they were not pleasurable so it was "easier".

It is a scary step and a very personal one. I would just see how you feel about it tomorrow. I will be celebrating a month next week and could not have done it without Champix.

Haha - that was my experience too. It felt like I was enjoying the fags more in the run up to my quit date - but like you say some kind of Champix miracle happened and i am now nearly one month free!

Good luck frenchkiss - let us know how you get on

Hi, Frenchkiss. I stopped on day 15 of champix (12/7/07 or thereabouts)- had gradually cut down prior to this and was putting cigs out having only had a couple of drags cos didn't know why I was smoking 'em and wasn't getting a kick from 'em.

Decide on your day to stop and give it a go!! It's easier than you think it's going to be. :)

Thanks everybody

Great advice from you all and I love reading other people's experiences - good or bad. I'm still a bit wavery today and have had 3 cigarettes but felt pretty sick so will stick to my quit day being tomorrow. I've got a drawer full of goodies to help me - glucose tablets, mints, Allen Carr book and DVD, fresh orange juice (in fridge not drawer!), breathing exercise advice from smoking clinic and will hopefully wake up tomorrow, have shower with lots of nice smellies (I am a girl by the way, in case you couldn't tell by the name!), put on fresh clean clothes, open all the windows and start my new clean life. See you on the Day 1 forum.

I quit using champix and i smoked right up to the last minute. then had a choice go and buy some more tobacco and never quit. or go for it so i did and its the best thing i have ever done well past 6 months now off the champix completely, the champix and the wonderful people on this forum have helped me stop. In the past i tried everything to quit and never managed it with the champix it was a lot easier than i thought.

Stick with it, i hope it works as well for you as it did for me, When you come to the end of your 12 weeks make sure that your doctor gives you at least 4 weeks preferably 12 weeks on reduced doseage you need to insist on that, as a lot of people who just stopped dead had problems.

I wish you all the best good luck

Just do what you feel is right for you - i started champix NY day and quit NY eve i took them 2 a day for a couple of weeks then just one now i take when i need them (1 today 1st in a week) i went thru a VERY big down, was like i was in mourning, was so unhappy - ' although smoking doesnt make me happy not smoking is making me soooo unhappy' but i really wanted to stop smoking this time and i think that is the key. We all get to a stage where we say enough is enough but it has to be your moment no one else's. If you are giving up for you then i believe you will do it.

I have not had a cig since NYE, i did try a puff the other weekend, enjoyed it immensly  but walked away from it, i hate the smell of smoke on another person now and cant believe i smelt like that for over 30 years. My response to people is 'I am currently not smoking' and i hope to stay that way

I wish you all the willpower in the world and hope you succeed. Choose when u are ready, make sure your pack runs out before you go to bed and start the next day fresh.

Oh and empty the ashtray in the dustbin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck xx

Hello Frenchkiss

I quit on day 9 of champix.Like sharkbait I think I smoked even More in the fewdays leading up to my quit date. I smoked what was to be last cig when I went to bed 2.10/07 The next morning I was suprised to find that I didn't really want a cig. There really weren't cravings there like in past attempts . I am nearly 5 months quit now after 26 years of puffing away.
