Hi. I've just joined the forum.

I smoked for nearly 50 years. I've given up from time to time but never lasted very long. I got along fine, in fact I enjoyed smoking.

Well, for the past 12 months I've not felt all that well. I was always tired and couldn't walk the distances I used to. Even digging the garden was more of an effort. It all culminated at Christmas when I went down with flu-like symptoms but was terribly short of breath and with legs and feet horribly swollen. In the end, on my GP's 2nd visit, I was sent into hospital where they found I had pneumonia with some long-term lung damage, though much less than I deserve. Anyway I'm being treated with oxygen therapy etc. and I'm well on the way to recovery.

It's 3 weeks since I had my last cigarette. The odd thing is that I haven't missed the nicotine at all but I do miss the action of smoking. I'm determined not to take it up again so when I feel the urge to smoke I either have a long, soft drink or a large handful of fruit - 5 a day has become more like 25.

I still have 10 cigarettes and a lighter tucked away in a drawer and I daren't get rid of them. While they are there, they are my "insurance" and the day I can put them in the bin I will know I really and truly am an ex-smoker. Until then, wish me luck. :)

I am a new quitter too, although I am only on my 5th day. Some days good:)some days bad:(. I am on 24 hr patches and inhalator but do not use the inhalator so much now.:D. Getting very funny dreams on a night though if I keep a patch on.

Anyway, very well done Cath. Keep it up and let us know how you are doing.

Nothing but Willpower. I really haven't missed the nicotine and, no, I don't understand why either as I was a 40 a day smoker. I do keep adding up how much money I haven't spent on cigarettes. That helps. ;)

Hi Cath, mine is a similar story to yours. I smoked between 40 & 50 a day for 47 years, and like you, ended up in hospital, unable to breathe, just before Christmas. At the moment l am waiting for an appointment with a Chest Spe******t. I think that you are doing absolutely great. 3 weeks going Cold Turkey is fantastic. I have been quit since 01/01/08, but i'm taking Champix, l know l would not be strong enough to do it your way.:( I sometimes forget that l no longer smoke, and it comes as a bit of a surprise, it takes me unawares.:) Keep coming back on here, it's great. We all support one another.:):)

Love Josie

Thanks everyone for your advice and support. It's good to be in touch with others who know what it's all about. I have 3 children, aged 44, 42 and 32, none of whom have ever smoked so, though they sympathise, they can't really empathise.

Oops, time for another satsuma and a few grapes, kiwi fruit. Kit-Kat?, oh all right then and, ermmmmm, is that a piece of chocolate cake?

Greetings Cath, should be all down hill for you now ....

The action your missing are your smoking triggers. With me it used to be when driving pull up at a red light = light up a cigarette. I was still reaching for an imaginary tobacco pouch at red lights into my Week Five :)
