Decided but weak

Hi Everyone,

I am a newbie who really wants to give up smoking and become 'clean' from the wicked weed so to speak.

I have been smoking for 40 years so its going to be hard.

Could you please help with some words of wisdom on how to actually start on this very hard journey.

I have been thinking about giving up for years but never could. But today I have decided I'm going to do it (fingers crossed)!!!!

Many thanks, Jen :)

Welcome Jen x x x x

Well first of all you can ask your Gp to refer you to a smoking cessation nurse, they will help you decide wich methods suit you best.

Plan a date to quit,

Write down lots of things you can do otherwise, ie reading, crosswords, sudoko, jigsaws, drawing, walking, writing or anything that you fancy doing to distract your attention.

Find something physical to do, chew gum or I liked to apply lip gloss! lol something to do with your fingers at troubled times when out.

Plan your savings and rewards, so that you have goals to go for say after 1 day you can spend your £5.50 on a magazine and a bottle of (albeit cheap :D) wine. then after 6 months maybe a week end away!

Lots of retail therapy and self indulgence required ;)

Drink plenty of water and eat little and often.

Use all the support you can get, from here, gp, cessation nurse, friends and family.

We are right behind you!

Hello Jen and congratulations on coming to an excellent decision.

Do you have access to a smoking cessation person? I go the nurse at my local surgery but several pharmacies near me also have them. I am on Champix. I've smoked for over 25yrs. I think the most important thing you can do Jen is just take it slowly. Don't think about stopping. forever - just focus on today. You will be suprised how quickly the days will go by until one day you will wake up and it won't evencross your mind to smoke!!!

I have joined the NHS Smokefree programme this afternoon.

It seems a brilliant programme with lots of group or individual help also with lots of info.

Please wish me luck, I'll need it!!!

I think I will be visiting your excellent forum for support in the future.

Kind regards, Jen

Well done Jen!

Hi Jen,

Have smoked for neigh on 25 years, eventually realised I wanted to stop smoking 4 years or so ago. I am on my 4th attempt, I found Allen Carrs book 'The easy way to stop smoking' inspiring. Pump his name into any search engine and you will get all sorts of products... Books, DVDs and CDs etc.

I am currently on day 5, feeling fine. I know there will be a few tough times ahead because I've been there before, but joining this forum has been a revelation to me.

Everybody is so supportive and of course have experience in the journey you intend to make, it's not always easy but try and be positive.

Best of luck

Hi Jen. Well Done for taking the step to give up. The smoking Cessation is the first thing I did. Then joined this forum.

You will get the support you need from both. I would say that you do have to be determined to do this. There will be times when you will be going mad and wanting to smoke but it dont last long. Have a glass of water and try and do something else.

I have been on patches for nearly 4 weeks now and its getting easier. It was hard for the first couple of weeks but i kept coming on here and talking to everyone and they supported me so much.

Good luck to you and I am sending you positive vibes. x

Congrats! The patches work really well for cravings. They might give you vivid dreams so just watch for that. Good luck and keep up the good work!
